Civilization is the mask which enables the individual to hide his primitive nature. This quote said by William Golding, the author of Lord of the Flies,shows how many characters have developed and showed their true colors. The boys in the novel all started off as average young British boys, but being trapped on a desert island after a plane crash changed who they were. Through the book the mask of civilization is shown through Jack and Ralph and how not having one affects how they feel and act. Both boys, when away from civilization show their true colors when there is no mask to hide their savage like nature. To begin with, Jack Merridew came onto the island being all talk, no action. This showed the connection he had to society, and the good he still had inside. Stated in the novel not long after, “The spear moved forward inch by inch and the terrified squealing became a high-pitched scream. Then Jack found the throat and the hot blood spouted over his hands.” This shows how Jack lost a part of his innocence by thriving off of the thrill and rush he gets when he is in control of the pig’s life and choosing to end it’s life with pure enjoyment. When Jack starts to put paint on his face he is washing away his old self and developing a different personality.
