My proposal topic is about the history of rock and roles such as war have in the development of rock music in America. I’m going to analyze the audio to Civil War by Guns N’ Roses and talk about the techniques used in this song . Civil War was written and released in the early 1990s and it’s a protest song against war. The song starts with a recorded audio statement from the film Cool Hand Luke. “What we've got here is failure to communicate .Some men you just can't reach. So, you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it!”(Cool Hand Luke). This opening statement was placed there to get the listener /observer to think about war and what really happens in war. This statement also makes the listener/observer think about how the government and its leaders fail to communicate about the problems that are going on and how they just jump right into war without the thoughts of the people whom have elected them. As the statement is playing, midway a slow sorrowful guitar solo begins. Then whistling, bird noises and bomb noises begin to play creating a war like scenario. By using these sounds it creates a sentimental uneasy mood. The song then begins with these lyrics “Look at your young men fighting. Look at your women crying. Look at your young men dying. It follows up with “We got the wall of D.C. to remind us all. That you can't trust freedom. When it's not in your hands. When everybody's fightin. For their promised land” (Civil War). In this verse the singer talks about DC’s wall with the veterans names who have died and how its suppose to symbolize those who have died for our freedom but it shows how instead freedom is non-existent. Also shows how war costs the lives of others and yet it keeps on happening. The lyrics and slow paced sounds here creates a mournful and depressing image of those who have died because of
