A civil war is when people in the same country fight. The Civil War is an important part of history in the United States. The Civil War America had was between the South and the North for the freedom of african Americans slaves on U.S soil. Many things happened before the Civil War, arguments, battles, and compromise. Three compromise happened the Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas- Nebraska Act. Those compromise delayed the Civil War by 40 years. The Missouri Compromise in 1820 was when Missouri requested to be part of the Union as a slave state. If Missouri were to join as a slave state the number of slave states which was 11 and free states which was also 11 would be unbalanced. With uneven numbers of slave …show more content…
and free states that means that the South would win most debates in the congress because they had one more state which means the had more representatives, and slavery would be permanent. The congress put together a compromise where Missouri would be a slave state and Maine would come in as a free state. They also drew an imaginary line between the slave states and the free states. With the Missouri compromise both the North and South got what they wanted and the number of states remained even so there was no longer conflict which delayed the Civil War because they dealt with the problem. The compromise of 1850, had to do with five laws that were passed.
In 1849 California wanted to join the Union and again the fear of the balance between free and slave states would be interrupted that's what brought all of this on. Senator Henry Clay was the one that introduced the five laws in his compromise. The five things included in The compromise of 1850 were, the fugitive slave act which meant runaway slaves in the North would have to be brought back to their owners in the South. The slave trade in Washington D.C. ended because it's the Capital, and they knew it would look bad for them, for example having an outsider in D.C. and having them see a station on the streets that selling human beings and trading them. Also California entered the Union as a free state. In the state of Utah a territorial government was made and the last part of the compromise was it settled a dispute between Texas and New Mexico which also gave New Mexico a territorial government. Territorial government “The Constitution empowers Congress to govern the territory”. Both sides got something they really wanted like the North got another state as a free state and the South got the fugitive slave act, so they wouldn't have to those any more of their “property” if they went into the North and if anyone saw a runaway slave in the North they had to bring them back. When a compromise is made it means the problem has been solved for the time …show more content…
being. Kansas- Nebraska Act, was the last of the three before the Civil War.
The Kansas- Nebraska Act was passed by the U.S congress it. It let people in Kansas and Nebraska to choose if they want slavery in their new found territories or not by popular sovereignty. It got rid of the Missouri Compromise which made many Northerns angry because they believed that the Missouri Compromise was a long standing Compromise, when the South agreed with the Kansas- Nebraska Act. As soon as the law passed slavery supporters and non supporters went to Kansas to try to have some effect with the election on slavery. Violence soon broke out in Kansas when slavery supporters were charged with fraud by the non slavery supporters. The violence that broke out was nicknamed “Bleeding Kansas”. Non slavery supporters held another election but slavery supporters refused to vote. The president at the time who was a supporter of slavery, to end the violence sent troops, in result another election was held and the proslavery citizens won but once again were charged with fraud. Kansas didn't become a state but later on a new Constitution was made and settlers in Kansas had more non slavery supporters so with another election in 1861, they won and became a part of the Union as a free state. The Kansas- Nebraska Act was the last string for delaying the Civil War because the South who started the Civil War didn't get anything out of it and it destroyed all the peace that was made by the Missouri
Compromise. These events lead to the Civil War, which was much needed. If we didn't have the Civil War there could be a chance that the United States wouldn't be together right now. Abraham Lincoln, the president at the time of the Civil War even knew that we needed to have the war. It took time to lead up to the Civil War and many events occurred for example the three compromises that were explained.
To put it simply (as I recall and it's been years since I've had to read about this subject)a new territory was opened to settle in. It was decided that the settlers of these states would decide whether or not slavery would be permitted. This gave birth to the new Republican Party which opposed slavery. The Act was designed by Stephen A Douglas a Democratic senator from Illinois (the same who would later defeat a young Abraham Lincoln for the senate in 1858) and repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Thousands of settlers both pro and anti slavery rushed into Kansas particularly and bloody, murderous fights broke out among the groups hence the nickname "Bleeding Kansas". It was actually one territory but this Act divided it into two states.
It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. The Act served to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery north of latitude 36°30´. Results of the Kansas-Nebraska Act were numerous and for the most part fatal to the country. The Act caused the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 to be virtually nullified, and caused compromising between the North and the South to be nearly impossible in the future.
Tempers raged and arguments started because of the Missouri Compromise. The simple act caused many fatal events because of what was changed within the United States. It may not seem like a big thing now, but before slavery had been abolished, the topic of slavery was an idea that could set off fights. The Missouri Compromise all started in late in 1819 when the Missouri Territory applied to the Union to become a slave state. The problem Congress had with accepting Missouri as a slave state was the new uneven count of free states and slave states. With proslavery states and antislavery states already getting into arguments, having a dominant number of either slave or free states would just ignite the flame even more. Many representatives from the north, such as James Tallmadge of New York, had already tried to pass another amendment that would abolish slavery everywhere. Along with other tries to eliminate slavery, his effort was soon shot down. The fact that people couldn’t agree on whether or not slavery should be legalized made trying to compose and pass a law nearly impossible.
First, the Missouri Compromise of 1820 established the slavery line that allowed slavery below it and forbid slavery above it. It also gave the South another slave state in Missouri and the north a free state in Maine. Although each region gained a state in the Senate, the south benefited most from the acquisition because Missouri was in such a pivotal position in the country, right on the border. Later on with the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, Missouri had a big role in getting Kansas to vote south because many proslavery Missourians crossed the border into Kansas to vote slavery. The Missouri Compromise also helped slavery because the line that was formed to limit slavery had more land below the line than above it. Therefore, slavery was given more land to be slave and therefore more power in the Senate, when the territories became state. In effect, the north got the short end of the stick and the south was given the first hint of being able to push around the north. The interesting thing is, the north agreed to all these provisions that would clearly benefit the south.
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was a debatable decision for the north and the south. A decision towards whether or not Missouri should come in as a slave state. In congress, those on the side of the north, found out that Missouri was going to be placed as a slave state and were dramatically upset. They were upset due to the fact that it would cause an unbalance. During the 1800’s there were an equivalent of eleven slave states and eleven free states. Naturally, ...
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was one of the first events that demonstrated Lincoln’s disapproval yet tolerance for slavery. The Kansas-Nebraska Act, proposed by Stephen A. Douglas and signed by Franklin Pierce, divided the region into two territories. The territory north of the 40th parallel was the Kansas Territory and the south of the 40th parallel was the Nebraska Territory, the controv...

The most powerful tool an American citizen have is their power to vote. The ability to vote allows a citizen to be heard and allows them to make a change in the government. By, casting your vote you are electing a person to stand up for you and your values and speak on your behalf. This ability to vote came from the 15th amendment which states “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” The amendment was designed to protect the rights of the newly freed slaves after, the Civil War. Unfortunately, this amendment failed in different ways that lead to the oppression of minorities in America for almost 100
In 1850, the government issued the Compromise of 1850 that had five main points, but there were three key statements that made it important. The first key point was that California would enter the Union as a free state, which meant that the
As the country began to grow and expand we continued to see disagreements between the North and South; the Missouri Territory applied for statehood; the South wanted them admitted as a slave state and the North as a free state. Henry Clay eventually came up with the Missouri Compromise, making Missouri a slave state and making Maine it’s own state, entering the union as a free state. After this compromise, any state admitted to the union south of the 36° 30’ latitude would be a slave state and a state north of it would be free. The country was very much sectionalized during this time. Thomas Jefferson felt this was a threat to the Union.
Additionally, the majority of states had conflicts between slavery in their territory, one of them dealt with missouri. Missouri applied for admission into the Union as a slave state; this became a problem because missouri ruined the balance for free slaves and slave states. The northern states wanted to ban slavery from occurring in missouri because the unbalanced situation it put towards the other states. In response, the southern states declared how congress doesn’t have the power to ban slavery in missouri. However, Henry Clay offers a solution, the missouri compromise of 1820. Missouri admitted as slave state and Maine becomes a free slave state. Slavery is banned in Louisiana creating a 36 30 line in missouri’s southern border; this maintained the balance in the U.S senate.
In the beginning, the Missouri Compromise was actually weakening any difficult situations between the sections. The Compromise of 1820 stopped the crisis between the North and the South., when they had to decide whether the Missouri should be a free state or slave state....
The gold rush from 1848 to 1855 really help encompassed the settlement and foundation to the compromise. The whole compromise was based on not just obtaining Texas after the Mexican-American war, but it was in direct connection with being balances in free and slave states. Along with the gold being in the state’s land there were also many things that California offered to the over all wealth of the Union with its access to water on ibe border. This balance and equality in power were the two main things the compromise addressed in the final product. Manifest Destiny was reached and occupied the land making profit from the railroads and obtained land while others decided to us, equality in power, money and land was all achieved with the five bills.
The Civil War was a battle between the northern states and the southern states. The southern states wanted to secede
The American Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, or simply the Civil War in the United States, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865, after seven Southern slave states declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America . The states that remained in the Union were known as the "Union" or the "North". The war had its origin in the fractious issue of slavery, especially the extension of slavery into the western territories. Foreign powers did not intervene. After four years of bloody combat that left over 600,000 soldiers dead and destroyed much of the South's infrastructure, the Confederacy collapsed, slavery was abolished, and the difficult Reconstruction process of restoring national unity and guaranteeing rights to the freed slaves began.
