Slavery in the American South The American South people caused slaves to be treated like animals. Slaves had to go through families getting split up and beaten whenever their owners felt like it . Their families were split up and had to live with someone new. In “Civil Rights Activist: Harriet Tubman” her sister were taken away but, their mom kept their brother. Her owner took her away from her family. Physical pain was a part of her early life. Frederick Douglass lived with his grandma when his parents died, then he was sent to live with a plantation owner who took him. He was moved on and on and on. Then he went to live on freely. Slaves were beaten all the time for everything, even if they did something right. The Negro Mother
