I believe that civil disobedience has a positive impact on a free society. The opposition of controversial and possibly immoral laws provides a voice for the people and allows for change to occur. Civil disobedience makes us question the norms of our society in a critical analysis of our system. I also feel that those whom practice civil disobedience have a strong sense of self and social conscious. Civil disobedience has been a part of American history since the Revolutionary War. From the Civil Rights Movement, draft dodgers during the Vietnam War, protestors in the Women’s Suffrage Movement, and the Civil War. Civil disobedience has been a force of major change throughout our nation. Muhammad Ali was made infamous for his stance against the draft during the 1960’s. Although his stance was met with opposition Ali refused to go fight in the war stating that it was against his religion. Ali shed light on the irrationality of the Vietnam War where Americans were attacking a country which had done no harm to them. Considering that the Vietnam War was a major defeat for the United States Muhammed Ali and other draft dodgers were right to oppose the war even though it went against the will of the American public. …show more content…

I feel this viewpoint is a very general view on what civil disobedience is really about. Civil disobedience questions the morality of law which allows for the growth through trial and error of a free society that strives to be ethical. Laws were originally created to so that communities of people could live peacefully and prosper together and the only this can be achieved is with a set of morally just laws. Immoral laws stunt the growth of a free society and harm the citizens in said society. Civil disobedience is a tool that should be applied to every free
