Citigroup Case Study
China has made it difficult for foreign banks to go into their country and offer their services by controlling their growth and only providing licenses for limited commercial activities. Citigroup, a premier foreign bank operating in China, has become one of the most successful financial services company in the world. This bank has outperformed and leads in the most profitable and attractive growth areas. With operations in more than 100 countries and over 268,000 employees, Citigroup's 2001 annual report provided an extremely optimistic view on the company's strengths in investment banking activities.
The privatization of state-owned enterprises (SOE) in China has provided an investment opportunity for Citigroup. Citibank, a branch of Citigroup, has developed a strategy for targeting strong SOEs by identifying 10 industries that will develop the fastest in a country and targeting profitable companies within those industries. Companies are chosen not only by their financial statement numbers, but also by the industrial sectors they are in and the qualities of the management team.
Adaptability to Expand Operations in China
Several factors illustrate Citigroup's attempts to display its adaptability into expanding its operations into China. The company's primary strategy is based on the achievements accomplished by Citibank. Citibank was one of the first foreign firms to obtain licenses to conduct a limited range of commercial activities in China. Citibank's current global network is large enough to conduct business with several of the most powerful corporate businesses in the offshore market. In relation to technology and financial innovation, Citibank is known to be ahead of the curve' and perceived as a top market bank in the United States and internationally. Through the years, Citibank has won numerous awards for providing better corporate banking services than other local banks.
Citibank's attempt to expand into China can be based on the previous accounting practices experience it had with this country. Citibank previously worked with the Public Bank of China (PBOC) "to improve the internal auditing requirements within the Chinese banking system" (p. 19). As a result, the PBOC recommended these practices to other banks throughout China. Citibank has established a human resource structure for training local people into becoming successful managers.

Third Star’s goal and objective is to develop and implement an enterprise architecture platform for the organization that is more streamlined and leaned with consistent policies and procedures throughout the company. A consolidated, centralized and standardized single version of the business structure and a modernize technology that can provide ease and flexibilities to their new and existing customers, in addition to their support staff and management teams.
Costco Wholesale Corporation was an uncommon type of retailers called wholesale clubs. These clubs differentiated themselves from other retailer by requiring annual membership purchase. Especially in case of Costco, their target market is wealthier clientele of small business owners and middle class shoppers. They are now known as a low cost or discount retailer where they sell products in bulk with limited brands and their own brand. The history of the U.S. financial market was established and has been growing over two centuries. For China, only twenty year has now passed since the financial market was built and growth. The Chinese financial market seems to be immature compared to the U.S. For example, China’s financial market does not have a thorough monitored stock market. The child is just starting to imitate the behavior and follow the step of the adult. However, the child is too young that mistakes always being made. On the other hand, since the child is in his early growth stage, a high level of growth is undertaking and a large progress might be attained. In today's China’s financial market, it is necessary for China to gather finance professionals in development of financial market. As a recent graduate student, working in the finance field less than a year, it is extremely hard for me in making a tiny positive effect on the growth of Chinese financial. However, to be engaged myself to the development of Chinese financial market is my long-term career goal.

Citigroup ' was founded as City Bank of New York in 1812 and remained a large regional bank until October 1998. Sandy Weill, then CEO of The Travelers Group an insurance company announced a $76 billion agreement to merge with Citigroup to form a new financial services conglomerate. It took only two years for the merger to pass federal law since the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act prevented banking and insurance companies from ever becoming one entity. As the new CEO of Citigroup, Sandy Weill was now at the helm of one of largest banking institutions in the world with over 300,000 employees and operations in over 120 countries. Popular brand names included CitiCards, CitiFinancial, CitiMortgage, Primerica, Salomon Brothers, Smith Barney, Diners Club and CitiCapital. Citigroup became the world’s first global financial supermarket where banking, brokerage and insurance were all held under the control of one organization. Citigroup is organized into four major segments; Consumer Banking, Global Cards, Institutional Client Group, and Global Wealth Management. Citigroup offers a wide range of products from retail banking, credit card services, and mortgage loans to global transaction services, M&A financing, and corporate lending. Citigroup is currently the largest bank in the United States with over US$600 billion in deposits and assets under management of over US$1.2 trillion.
By learning from its defeat in Germany, Walmart has been able to make progress in its strategy to expand into the Chinese market, which also has a substantially foreign political and cultural environment. Along with its financial capability, advanced supply chain management capability, and information technology capability, Walmart adapted its business strategy to align itself with the local taste. For example, Walmart sources about 95% products locally and hires Chinese citizens to manage its stores. Due to the heavy pollution and poor safety management, Chinese customers are concerned about the quality of products made in China.
