Cinderella’s mother died when she was a young girl. Her father remarried Lady Tremaine, hoping to give his daughter a stepmother and family. One day, her father never returned from a trip, leaving Cinderella in the care of her stepmother. Her stepmother, Lady Tremaine was jealous of her charm and beauty, and gave her extra chores, such as bathing her cat Lucifer. Her stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella made her work all day, cooking, cleaning and sewing. Cinderella maintained her kindness and gentleness, despite her family’s cruelty. She was friends with all of the animals, especially the mice, including her friends Jaq and Gus Gus. She tried to make the best of her situation and remained positive. She dreamily returned home, knowing that she would forever have the secret happiness of meeting the prince. Meanwhile, the prince was desperate to find the beautiful girl from the ball whose name he did not know. He instructed the Grand Duke to use of the king’s men to find the girl whose foot fit the glass slipper. They made the rounds, going to every house in the area with a young lady. Girls went to desperate measures to try to fit their feet in the shoes and win the prince, but none could. When the Duke arrived at the house of Cinderella, Lady Tremaine locked her in the attic, having suspected that she was the mystery princess. Both Drizella and Anastasia tried to squeeze their feet in the slipper to no avail. Luckily, Cinderella’s mouse friends freed her just in time, and she came downstairs before the Grand Duke left. As the Grand Duke was about the place the glass slipper on Cinderella’s foot, Lady Tremaine tripped him and the glass slipper shattered. However, Cinderella had the other glass slipper in her pocket, and of course, it fit! Cinderella and the Prince were soon married, and the kingdom rejoiced. The most noteworthy, without a doubt, is when the lost shoe is fit on Cinderella’s foot. The search and the fitting of the shoe is ritually symbolic because rather than look for Cinderella based on her looks, they searched for her foot by foot. This shows that she is the perfect fit for the prince, despite her tough life and the doubts of her stepmother and stepsisters. Another ritual that occurs throughout the story is the manner in which Cinderella performs her chores. Although her stepmother and stepsister do their best to ruin her happiness with overwhelming amounts of chores, she never fails to preform them with glee, not letting their cruelty get to her. This symbolizes Cinderella’s inherent goodness and grace in the face
