Church Service Observations The name of the church is called “Asian American outreach church”. It is located on summit Avenue right next to Rankin Elementary School. They share the same building with the Rankin Baptist church in a small room. Their congregation is small consisting of only teenagers. The pastor that created this church was in his mid-thirties. He was the pastor and the youth leader at the same time. He played the piano and helped the youth with singing practice on Saturdays and preaches on Sundays. He left the church to be a pastor at a bigger church that was in need of one. When he was the pastor, he had trained some of the youth how to lead worship and how to set up the equipment. Now that he is gone, those youth are continuing …show more content…
The time set for practice was at 7PM but because they are teenagers, everyone came later than the expected time. One by one people started to come. For those that knew me, greeted me with smiles and hugs. I also saw new faces that only greeted me with a smile and a confused face. When everyone had arrived, one of the youth members introduced me and told them about my assignment. They all offered to help and told me to ask them any question that I might have. The place that they are having a service in is a fellowship room. So after the introduction, they split into groups. One group helped setting up the musical equipment while the other group put away the tables and set up the chairs. The fellowship room was big, filled with long tables and chairs around it. Another small room could be found in the fellowship room and it was the kitchen. They set up the chairs into rows of four. There are five chairs in each row. The guys would do the heavy work like lifting up the tables and putting them away. On the other hand, the equipment teams were setting up the speaker and plugging in the microphones to make sure they work. There were a lot of coiled up cables. It looked so confusing, but they knew exactly where it all belongs. They projected the lyrics on the wall. They didn’t seem to have the screen where they could project the lyrics so they used a wall. I thought this was very creative and it showed that they really use the space efficiently.
In my paper I will talk about my visit to The Community Church at Murphy's Landing (CCML). I have chosen this particular Church because it is a family church type and my neighbor goes there and she encouraged me to go with her. I went there with my neighbor on April 6, 2014.This church is an appropriate for this assignment because the people there are welcoming me with an open heart and they are willing to help and provide me with information. When I visit the Church’s site I read these words “We know visiting a new church can be intimidating. But, we want to help you to be as comfortable as possible when and if you join us”. The people gather in the church weekly to glorify God in joyful worship. The expressions of worship on CCML take many forms a prayer, a hymn of reverent awe, a guitar ringing with a chorus of praise, or a warm handshake and a welcoming smile. Their weekly services begin at 9:30 each Sunday at church. Also, they have weekly podcast if anyone wants to listen online. They have many types of services for parents, kids and students. People at CCML were so friendly; they gather around me and start welcoming me, one by one. People there introducing themselves to me, one after another and provide me with their contact information and help. Then we start talking about the church services and Christianity in particular. The mission of CCML was knowing, growing and loving. They seek to live out our mission by worshipping together as a local community of believers, growing in spiritual maturity through discipleship, education, and small groups, caring for one another within the context of the larger church body and small groups, and Communicating the love of Christ to our world, both through local outreach and global mis...
The only people who go to youth groups are the perfect kids who never do anything wrong and go to church every week and discuss God and what is going on in their life. Many people believe this to be the stereotype but while doing my research I find this to be quite wrong. While there may be those kids within this community they do not represent it as a whole they are just a small part of a larger group. When you look at a group of people you classify them according to how they look, act, or talk. Gee says in order to be recognized as part of a certain community you must “Speak the right way, but you have to act and dress in the right way as well.”(Pg. 440). While people do not realize it all of these factors add up to form discourse communities. Rarely do people take the time to look deeper into those communities to get a better understanding of them.
On the first evening of service, I was prepared, yet scared that I would say something wrong or the children there would not accept my ideas. When I arrived, the group was small, as promised since it was a Saturday and many of the hospital guests were out with their parents or home for a fun weekend of activities. The children and youth who were there, however, gathered 'round for some of the activities I had planned. First, I made it a point to learn everyone's name which meant that I p...
“Reaching Out without Dumbing Down” seems to be constructed for the church leader, elder, or pastor who is considering altering their current, historic worship style for a more modern one that may attract greater numbers of unsaved people. She provides excellent standards to help Pastors and Worship Leaders plan, execute, and evaluate worship services. These same standards provide a great opportunity to educate the church family on the reasons behind the use of certain worship elements. Although written for church leadership, the everyday church member would also benefit from understanding the very concepts that Dawn is directing at God-empowered leaders.

...act, these topics were just as much for small churches to structure the music program after. The issue I see in this, though, is each church is different and there are different needs to each one. He said that one should hire a part time director but even that may not be affordable to a lot of churches. Some churches may be able to but other do not and its important to figure out what one’s church needs.
The service was very formal. Time did not seem to be kept for each part. The service started with gospel music. I believe that the Gospel music was the center point of the worship. It took up the longest portion and everyone was involved.
We first bought materials, including foam board, dowel rods, moss, popsicle sticks, and paint. We also assembled glue sticks, glue guns, and paint brushes. The first day we met at Evan’s house. We made a sketch by researching the actual dimensions and creating a scale model. After that, we went to Evan’s mother’s office at the University of Evansville to look at models built by her set director. The second workday was held at school, where we cut out the foundation of the building. The team ran into its first problem when we disagreed about constructing the floors. We decided to wait until later to make the floors. Our third and fourth meetings took place at Hamza’s house. While Hamza drew art on the outside of the model, Evan and I cut out and constructed walls from foam board. Hamza kept drawing while Evan and I built the stage out of dowel rods and popsicle sticks. After forty-five minutes, we realized that we didn’t have enough foam board, so we went to the store and bought more. During our fourth meeting, Evan and Hamza painted while I constructed the stage roof. The longest work day, the fifth, occurred on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. We worked at Evan’s house from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. While Hamza and Evan built the towers and began assembling the pieces of the replica, I cut out all of the roof shingles. One major problem occurred when we attempted to
Brother Terry, lead us in a quick prayer to open the morning's service. The band was already in position and a worship team was waiting in the wings.
This church can be considered contemporary as they use piano, guitars, and drums during their worship. The pastor, or leader of the congregation, then preaches a sermon, which is often a life lesson taught through a story in the bible. They proceed with what they call “alter call”. It is an invitation to come to the front and pray. Their LEADERSHIP involves a local pastor, who preaches sermons and gives guidance to the congregation.
On Sunday March 12th and 19th, my husband and I attended Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church (HTSN) in Finneytown, Ohio. The church conducts Orthros (Matins) at 8:15 am and Divine Liturgy from 9:30-11:30 am. I chose to attend HTSN for two reasons; first, they host the annual Panegyri Festival and two, learning about the 1054 split intrigued me given the current state of the Methodist Church.
When I arrived at the Saint Adalbert Church of Berea, I was surprised to see that it was in a rather modest building, unlike many churches that you see around the area. It was a plain brick building with some statues on the outside. The statues were of religious figures, animals, and scenery, which provided for a calming atmosphere in the summer sun, even for someone who is nonreligious. Rather peculiarly, the statues were modest; they were not impeccably sized or extravagant in color, which I do not find to be particularly common. Often times when you see religious statues, they are quite large and are often the centerpiece of the outside of the building.
When the church came into view it had a fairly large parking lot; however one had a few cars. Walking into the church there was very minimum color and the colors that were present were dark colors such as blue and maroon and brown were the three main colors. The service was to begin at 10:30 am but began over 30 minutes later. We were greeted by the pastor’s wife and the secretary of the church. There were no symbols or figures on the walls or on the windows of the church as compare to a catholic church.
His church is a “good sized” suburban church that has been around for 295 years. He describes the parishioners as having a “broad tent” of theological views. This congregation is open to new ideas and re-visiting the old. They appear to be carrying out intentional missional work in their community
For my observation trip, I decided to visit St. Ignatius Church in Oregon, Ohio. I visited a mass at 11:30 on Sunday November 19. I decided to visit a catholic church because my family has no religious background whatsoever, and I decided that I could go with one of my good friends that way if I need to ask questions, she was there to answer them for me.
