The cultural aspect of the honor code is introduced in The Chronicles Of a Death Foretold as a major focus that revolves around the death of Santiago Nasar. In the Colombian community of this town the cultural value of honor is taken very seriously and is valued a lot to a large extent. Honor to the Colombian culture creates high societal expectations that are seen between the major characters of the novel. The importance of it exposes the influences and importance honor code plays in the Colombian culture following with the conflicts and consequences someone receives when breaking that honor.
As part of the culture women are expected to follow certain expectations in order to obtain their honor and respect. Angela Vicario represents what women were supposed to follow and the style of living they have to prioritize. Angela’s action of breaking the honor code shows the major importance of it in the Colombian culture. The issues resulted by breaking the rules come after both men and women in different aspects. Women receive the most consequences as they get higher standards imposed on them. After Angela’s family finds out that her pureness is gone her mom “[holds her] by the hair with one hand and [beats] her with the other with such rage that [Angela] thought she was going to kill [her]” (46). Her mother is an example of marianismo in the sense that when knowing her daughter wasn’t a virgin anymore she beat her not only because she lost her virginity but also because it was a sign of dishonorment to the family.
