A lot of directors try so hard to become a game changer, to be able to redefine the filming industry by using their own unique techniques. Many succeeded and left a legacy. One of the most inventive directors nowadays is Christopher Nolan. Christopher Nolan’s auteurship has successfully make him the ‘author of the movie’. In three of his most iconic works, Inception, The Prestige and Interstellar, Nolan combines elements of bending the storyline’s chronology, using labyrinth both metaphorically and literally, making using of Victorian aesthetics and elements of suspense as his creative signature in the movies. Cobb’s obsession with Mal poses a threat to the completion of the job as it recreates a projection of her at every level of the dreams during the inception process. After getting over her, Cobb either succeeds or fails the job which is portrayed really ambiguously to Nolan’s intention. The Prestige is 2006 thriller about the rivalry between two magicians Borden and Angier who started their career in magic working together. Out of jealousy over Olivia, Angier faked his death using a clone created by Tesla to make Borden guilty of murder and be sentenced to death. It turns out that Fallon, Borden’s assistant, is actually Borden’s twin in disguise who has been there the whole time going back and forth to help Borden with his famous ‘The Transported Man’ trick. In the end, Borden’s twin avenges his brother by shooting Angier with reference to all the clones Angier has killed. Christopher Jonathan James Nolan is a film director, screenwriter and producer best known for movies like the Prestige, The Dark Knight series, Inception, Interstellar, etc. (Wikipedia). His work is best known for his distinctive style both in narration and the use of editing. The thorough consideration of all those factors create such a masterpiece in every story Nolan told. Although the amount of feature length movies Christopher made are still of a small amount compared to others who were much more experienced in the industry, a lot of film students and the general public already consider him as an auteur. Truffaut said that films that are of traditional quality, written and created for film festivals to compete or other purposes with “non-conformist elements and gloom combined with an easy daring” rather than for the sake of artistic integrity were writers’ films. The director, in this case, is only a craftsman who transferred the script onto the big screen. (Staples 2). The auteur theory started with the French cinema in Truffant’s article.
