The play being discussed in this critique will be Christmas Carol, written by Charles Dickens and Adapted and originally directed by Michael Wilson. The Alley Theatre produces its own version directed by James Black. It was performed between the dates November 24-December 30 2017. Costume design was by Alejo Vietti. Set Design was by Tony Straiges. Lighting Design was by Rui Rata. Sound Design was by John Gromada. Stage management by Kristen Larson, Emily Bohannan, and Rachel Dooley-Harris. Choreography by Hope Clarke.
Christmas Carol instills a powerful message about redemption and the spirit of the holiday season. Christmas carol is a novella. It is a play about a mean-spirited, misery old man named Ebenezer Scrooge siting in his counting house on a frigid Christmas Eve. Scrooge thinks that Christmas is just an excuse for people not to work. Rich man but hoards money refuses to give charity because he thinks that poor are lazy and deserve no help. Scrooge had no Christmas cheer but he transformed when visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. The play is staged in London, from the slums to middle-class home to wealthy mansions. Acting was so fine that it had me amazed. Jeffrey Bean was great as Scrooge, he did justice to his character. His act of churlish, miserable and mean-spirited was felt by the audience. It was so real. Melissa Pritchett as Mary Pidgeon was phenomenal, the spirit of the past showed scrooge the events in his past that have made him into the man he is today. David Rainey as the spirit of the present demonstrated Scrooge what he has ignored from the present, and did an amazing job and fine acting in doing so. It couldn’t get any better than that. All the other characters did a fine job to keep the audience hooked and interested. Direction was commendable too, it almost seemed like we are not watching a live performance but, a well-directed musical
