Life of Pi by Yann Martel offers many connections to the Christian religion, such as Pi’s journey of hardships and miracles being similar to Jesus’s journey through Israel, Pi being reborn when he landed in Mexico just as Jesus was reborn on Easter, and Pi taming Richard Parker is like God taming humanity as Jesus. The book offers much to learn about religion, faith, and beliefs. Pi’s life is one of triumph and glory. The trials of his life are similar to the savior of one of his religions, as Jesus went through many trials as well. Pi Patel is a boy of many faiths, but Christianity offers the most to connect with, as the similarities between Jesus’s journey to the cross and Pi’s journey on the Pacific are plentiful and interesting. He survives 227 harsh and tedious days at sea with nothing but a tiger and the presence of God to keep him company. As Pi says, though, “The presence of God is the finest of rewards” (Martel 79). When Pi lands in Mexico, he is no longer Pi Patel, boy of many faiths. He is Pi Patel, conqueror of the sea, tamer of tigers, and man of many faiths. Pi is reborn as a new soul, and now his life will forever be divided into two sections: Before and After. We do this with the life of Christ as well. But Pi being reborn on the sandy beaches of Mexico is much more than that. It’s a direct parallel to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Pi became a new person, while Jesus became a new entity. Jesus went on to promise his disciples that the presence of the holy spirit would exist from now until eternity. Jesus became the holy spirit, a facet of the faith Christians nowadays focus on more than ever. According to an Encyclopedia Britannica article on Christianity, “The vast majority of Christians focus their faith in Jesus Christ as someone who is also a present reality” (McGinn et al.). This means that Jesus is present in the life of everyone, and he does this through the Holy Spirit. (this seems to be filler and I don’t follow how it belongs here.)
