Before going to Alaska, Chris McCandless had failed to communicate with his family while on his journey; I believe this was Chris’s biggest mistake. Chris spent time with people in different parts of the nation while hitchhiking, most of them whom figured out that McCandless kept a part of him “hidden”. In chapter three, it was stated that Chris stayed with a man named Wayne Westerberg in South Dakota. Although Westerberg was not seen too often throughout the story, nevertheless he was an important character. Introducing himself as Alex, McCandless was in Westerberg’s company for quite some time: sometimes for a few days, other times for several weeks.
He left and “walked into the wild”, as he said, to escape his problems (Krakauer, 69). He never confronted his dad about his feelings. Carine McCandless talks about this personality trait in Chris saying, “Chris was the sort of person who brooded on things. If something bothered him; he wouldn’t come right out and say it” (Krakauer, 122). He changed his name, He wasn’t trying to take pride in his “adventure”. It was an extra and unnecessary precaution to ensure that his problems would not affect his escape. Chris McCandless changed his name and then continued his life ignoring all of the problems he had ever
Although Chris McCandless' life at home growing up was hounded by his so called "ignorant" father or his "bigot" parents, made the best out of his life whenever he could. He was on the cross country team when he was younger, and they all ran out into the wild almost, purposely getting lost. Being on that team and experiencing that made him happier and started his interest and passion for embracing nature. Chris even found solace and was content with providing food, such as hamburgers, stated by his cross country teammate Eric Hathway, providing company to people less fortunate than him. Taking hikes with his grandfather and doing things as mentioned previously (cross country), eventually influenced him to make his greatest adventure and unbeknownst
He was a very intelligent kid. He graduated from Emory University in Atlanta with a degree in history and anthropology. The day after his graduation, he went on a road trip. He drove all around the country without an itinerary. Chris didn?t tell his parents about this, of course. The only way they found out he was gone was when they went to visit him in Atlanta and his apartment was empty. He even took a new name, Alexander Supertramp.
“Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, it’s what’s inside counts” This quote reminds people about how they should not judge other people from the outside but look deep into their true personalities. Looking from the appearance and how Chris lives, everyone would assume that Chris is a crazy, foolish person and does everything without thinking. If people try to know more about Chris, they would have different perspective. Chris is intelligent, determined, independent and follows what he believes. He went into the wilderness to escape from the society that tries to suppress him and look for the meaning of life.
In the following years has played in other films like “Happy Gilmore”, “The Wedding Singer” with Drew
Chris met three important people during his adventure these people were Jan Burres, Ronald Franz, and Wayne Westerberg. Out of everyone who he had met it was only these three important people who he decided to stay in contact with, why? McCandless had a great childhood from the looks of it, all the photos of his childhood were him hiking or out on vacation or a happy family portrait, but those were just pictures. Chris’s father was a smart man he got paid a good salary, owned a nice home, had a wife and children of his own, but that was only the tip of the iceberg. He was abusive to his wife and made his children watch, this hurt Chris deeply. Chris’s mom would often tell them she is sorry, that she got pregnant with Chris and can't leave. It hurt Chris so much he decided to leave,
Adam Sandler accepts a Kids' Choice Award for best movie actor. Many adult movie critics would disagree.
...irrefutably suggest that he was selfish and unwilling to put any effort into emotional healing with his family, friends and society in general. He was a giver, as shown by his donation to charities, but he could have been much more effective in social justice if he had the maturity and selflessness to pursue it and stick to it. Chris could have been a lasting friend to many people around the country, but he got scared off too easily when facing emotional connections. And most painfully for his family, he could have saved his own life and saved them a lifetime of pain and sorrow if he could have sat down with his parents and siblings to discuss what was bothering him and find ways to work through it. But he ran into the wild, laid his life on the line, and took the coward’s way out.
Was he a reckless idiot? That is the big question. This is what people always seem to talk about when they talk about Chris McCandless. There are many people who think that Chris McCandless was a reckless idiot who was mentally ill, or something else was wrong with Chris. It seems that almost everybody that met Chris thought maybe Chris was crazy or had problems. Here are just a few things that people said about Chris and his state of mind. Pg 40 Zarza admits saying, "he was always going on about trees and nature and weird stuff like that. We all thought he was missing a few screws. Pg 42 Charlie said, "seemed like a kid who was looking for something." Pg 45 Burres said "I thought Alex had lost his mind when he told us about his 'great Alaskan odyssey, ' as he called it."
When Chris left for his journey he wasn’t crazy or stupid as many would say. “McCandless went into the wilderness not primarily to ponder nature or the world at large, but rather to explore the inner country of his own soul” pg. 183. The fact that Chris never bother to discuss his Alaskan walk about with his anyone especially his parents wasn’t intentional. However throughout the whole book it was made very clear that he was at odds with his parents in some way to go off on his journey but he didn’t want to hurt them, which I think Walt and Billie finally realized visiting the bus where Chris had passed. I think Chris just wanted to get away from his everyday life, clear his mind, a mind that didn’t involve the worries of expectations and the thoughts of his parents hanging on his shoulders.
He wanted to get away from all the materialistic world and find himself. Chris never felt that he fit in at Emory. He was not one to brag about his family’s wealth nor did he care for it, “Chris started complaining about all the rich kids at Emory”(page 123). Even before his big Alaska trip, McCandless had taken small trips here and there, he did not know what was going to happen, but he was an advertorials guy and he just wanted to have fun while he can. He wanted to make up for the time that was lost during his teenage years because he blames his dad infidelity for making his childhood so terrible, “He later declares to Carine and others that the deception committed by Walt and Billie made his ‘entire childhood seem like a fiction’”(page 123). Chris just wanted to be happy, he wanted to find his life whether it was going into the wild or not, surviving or not, he just wanted to find himself. According to Maia Szalavitz Why the Teen Brain IS drawn to Risk, she states, “ … teens tend to wildly overestimate certain risks …”(page 1) and that is what Chris did, he had too overconfident in himself and did not think this trip thoroughly because he did not pack all the necessities not did he accept gear or tools that people would offer him along the way He knew the consequences that he would eventually face and instead of preparing for them he decided to ignore them. Maybe if he had a map,
He was born John William Ferrell on July 16, 1967 in Irvine, California. Despite his parents' divorce in 1975, Ferrell's natural intelligence and strong work ethic made him a top student in school. In high school he wasn't a member of the drama team or anything of the sort. In fact, he was a big guy that his school recognized as being one of their top football and baseball players. In football he played offense, defense, and even ended up kicking for the team.
Before he went off on the trip, he said that "he would shortly donate all the money in his college fund to OXFAM America, a charity dedicated to fighting hunger” (pg. 20). Throughout Chris’s wild adventures he met a lot of people, like Ron Franz and Wayne Westerberg, and gave them voluptuous amounts of advice on how to live their life to the fullest and helped them with hard situations. The advice he gave to Ron in a long letter before he died was "my point is that you do not need me or anyone else around to bring this new kind of light in your life" (pg.71). He also gave Wayne his time when he “worked hard, doing dirty, tedious jobs that nobody else wanted to tackle: mucking out warehouses, exterminating vermin, painting, scything weeds"(pg. 62). Spending so much time with these inspirational people made Chris think about his choices he made in his life, and why they were not
Chris was intelligent; he had a college education. The people that Chris met along his journey had good things to say about him. Westerberg gave Alex a job, "He was the hardest worker I've ever seen. Didn't matter what it was, he'd do it..." (18). Alex was a hard-working kid who constantly tried proving to himself that he could do the impossible. Chris didn't like how people desperately tried to help him, however. "After an extended argument Burres also got McCandless to accept some long underwear and other warm clothing
