Marriage in the United States is thought to be a very important event because it is the celebration of two people professing their love for each other, and vowing to be with one another for the rest of their lives. Although each person vows that they will support each other no matter the situation, sometimes that are certain obstacles that will pull two people apart. In Chosen Place, Timeless People by Paul Marshall, Running in the Family by Michael Ondaatje, and King Lear by William Shakespeare, it is shown that although marriage is often seen as a sacred thing, sometimes marriage is not as solid as everyone may think it is, and that it may actually break very easily. Marriage connects two people together, but it may not last forever. In King Lear by William Shakespeare, Goneril and Albany are married to each other. Goneril is cruel and evil, while Albany kind, does not stop her actions. There is a difference in personalities, and this may be a factor as to why Goneril and Albany’s marriage fell apart. Goneril had no qualms about planning for her father’s death. Albany on the other hand, had a fight with Goneril when he learned that King Lear went crazy due to her and her sister Regan’s abuse (4.2.39-45). Saul and Harriet are married to each other, but they both have been in a previous relationship. Saul was once married to another woman, but she died during childbirth. Unlike his relationship with Harriet, Saul cared more about his first wife, due to the fact that they are both Jewish and could relate to each other since their ancestors went through the Holocaust.
