A discourse community has an agreed set of common public goals. It is a group of individuals that have a specific way of interacting and communicating with one another. It is also used as a means to maintain and extend a group’s knowledge, as well as initiate new members into the group. Specific kinds of languages are used as a form of social behavior. Such discourse communities vary in size, purpose and importance. Choir is a form of musical art. It consists of four different types of groups, and each vocal ranges from highest to lowest. One way is, gestures and other body expressions. When a mentor conducts a music piece he or she is put front and center from the choral group. They are in control of unifying the performers and setting the tempo of a song as well as shaping the sound of the ensemble by the movement of their hands. Choir has a positive and friendly environment. People are able to get feedback from one another and they improve overtime. Emailing is also another way of communicating in Choir. Usually when a choir has a lot of members, an alternative is to email the messages to those performers rather than having to tell them one by one. Emailing is a good way for Choir to reach the performers because some may not have flexible schedules meaning, they can not meet up with their
Discourse Communities are defined as “a group of individuals bound by a common goal who communicate through approved channels and whose discourse is regulated” (Couzelis et al. 12). Every person on this planet belongs to a discourse community whether they realize it or not. If you start at a larger scale, Texas A&M University-Commerce is a large discourse community, and within that larger discourse community there are hundreds, quite possibly thousands of smaller discourse communities. Many of the discourse communities overlap with members belonging to several communities at the same time.
A discourse community has mechanisms of communication amongst their members. A discourse community uses its sharing mechanisms mainly to provide information and feedback. A discourse community applies and holds one or more genres in the communicative progress of its goals. In addition to holding genres, a discourse community has to obtain some specific lexis. Lexis is the total stock of words in a language. A discourse community has a level of members with a proper degree of appropriate content and discoursal expertise, ranging from a novice to an expert. I will further explain each characteristic and how it relates to the dance
Joining a discourse community is when you all share a common like or belief. Joining a discourse community can sometimes be a challenge. Rather you’re new at it or been participating in something for a very long time. Every discourse community is different and can be operated differently and by different type of people. They say drill team and dancing is easy and doesn’t take a lot of hard work like in other sports so in this paper I will be sharing with you all my journey of joining drill team/dance team and appealing ethos, logos and pathos.
To examine various discourses, it is crucial that the idea of discourse and the way in which discourses operate is clear. A discourse is a language, or more precisely, a way of representation and expression. These "ways of talking, thinking, or representing a particular subject or topic produce meaningful knowledge about the subject" (Hall 205). Therefore, the importance of discourses lies in this "meaningful knowledge," which reflects a group’s ideolo...
What is a discourse community? According to John Swales, a linguistics professor at the University of Michigan, “A discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals” (220). These common goals could be that of set rules or mission statements. In Addition, “A discourse community has mechanisms of intercommunication among its members” (221). This means that these communities have their own general, yet specialized way, of communicating. He also states that, “A discourse community uses its participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback” (221). He states that the use of emails, text, newsletters are in place to communicate information and feedback. Swale’s mentions the development of lexis for communication purposes in a discourse, a type of specialized language. Overall, a discourse community is a community that has its own structure and communication that is different from any other discourse. Within my discourse community of patient transport, one must be a patient transporter to understand the procedures.
Football is a discourse community I am involved in where the members have similar goals and expectations. As in, what Swales describes a discourse community as groups that have goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals”. In his article “The Concept of Discourse Community” (Swales 466-479) Swales argues for a fresh conceptualization of discourse community, especially as a distinct entity from the similar sociolinguistic concept of speech community, and building upon the foundations of that argument defines discourse community in his own. In the Conceptualization of Discourse Community he talks about the six defining characteristics of a discourse community. The discourse community I am part of is playing and coaching football.
In the Swales document we looked at in class, a discourse community has a set of common goals (Discourse Community). In high school basketball, the goal is to win the state championship. Also, a discourse community uses a specific jargon (Discourse Community). We see this in the rules and how some players and coaches communicate. Finally, a discourse community has its new members learn from experienced members (Discourse Community). This is evident when we talk about learning the fundamentals from the coaches. High school basketball can be a very diverse discourse community because while every team has different ways of doing things, they all have the same end goal of being the state champions. Basketball has always
Discourse communities are the group of people who can communicate with each other, they may have the same topic, the similar interests, or the same culture. People may use the right language and the similar beliefs so they can recognize in the discourse communities. The writer of “literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction” named James Paul Gee, he argues that “we must write and say the right thing in the right way while playing the right social role and to hold the right vales, beliefs, and attitude” (484). People should have the right identity on the suitable places. Discourse communities has a lot of requirements for people to get into, people can learn different abilities on different discourse communities.
A discourse community is a group of people with relatively the same goals and interest to achieve a specific goal. Discourse communities gain there members by qualification, shared objectives, training, or persuading others to join their discourse community. In order for a group to be a discourse community, they must have their own languages, text, rules, and ethics that will make the discourse community run more efficiently. They will also have a form of intercommunication among the group to keep everyone involved or informed with upcoming events or just important news. Discourse communities will have a type of mechanism to provide feedback to help improve the group. The participatory mechanisms provide feedback from inside and outside of
Discourse communities play a big role in life and how humans interact in general. A discourse community refers to a group of people who have language, life patterns, culture, and communication in common with each other. The idea of a discourse community has also been used to bring people of different orientations together, like family members, students, or committees. All of these types of people might have different standards of living, like their level of income, education, and work abilities. Discourse community can also refer to a speech community, because the main feature of a discourse community is communication. A discourse community can include groups of different regional areas that may or may not share norms and living patterns
Discourse community can be any community you’re a member of that share a common language, ideas, and goals. There are many discourse communities that had wildly different ideas and some that have very similar ideas but are separate. Knowing about discourse communities will help me understand that different people believe in different things than myself, so I may address them with a different understanding than those that are a member of my community. Knowledge of discourse communities will also allow me to learn more outside of my own discourse community. Becoming a part of the working discourse community at the University Mall in Davis has enlightened me. The workers discourse community in San Diego is different than the one here. Knowing

Discourse is a specific series of representation and practices through which meanings are produced, identities constituted, social relations established, and political and ethical outcome made more or less possible. This is how people understand and communicate everything and nothing exists outside of discourse. Individuals who use this concept say that everything is language, and that there is no reality so because of their linguistic idealism, they are unable to take political positions and defend an ethical stance.
Being successful on a professional field requires a lot of efforts and dedication. Before one could enter a new profession, one needs to know and understand the underlying rules and norms required to fit in to a target profession. Different professions have their own different norms, traditions, and forms of communication. In order to achieve a common goal, some professions might require one to have a lot of technical skills, and some might require great communication and writing skills. One might be able to define this as a discourse community. The term discourse community can be identified as “a grouping of people who share common language norms, characteristics, patterns, or practices as a consequence of their ongoing communications and identification with each other.” (ncte.org). Understanding the importance of such underlying rules and norms of a discourse community is important as it gives someone an insight on how to fully incorporate oneself to this kind of environment. In this assignment and the course of this paper, I will investigate a discourse community I am hoping to join professionally. The professional discourse community I am hoping to join is business.
