A Friend or a Foe An English author Suzanne Collins once wrote “For there to be betrayal, there would have to have been trust first,” and in the case of Max’s murder, he held a great trust in his friends who ended up killing him. Max recently inherited twelve million dollars, and used it to host a party at his newly acquired beach house for his four closest friends. At this party, Max was found murdered and the investigation began. All four of his friends Chloe, Ray, Beverly, and Dez were also included in Max’s will, giving them equal reasons to be Max’s murderer. Because of her compelling motive, discrepancies in the suspects’ testimonies, and incriminating physical evidence, it is clear that Chloe Goode is Max Powers’s killer. The first reason …show more content…
One inconsistency in Chloe’s testimony is her location before the crime took place. Before the murder, Chloe claims “I went upstairs to take a shower in the bathroom at 2:30 pm” (“Suspect Case File”). In Ray's testimony, he contradicts this by stating “I set down my cup of cola and went to the bathroom at about 2:45 pm” (“Suspect Case File”). Ray’s claim here is much more likely to have happened since Dez also heard Ray called out. Ray also claimed to be drinking Coca-Cola before he went to the bathroom and at the crime scene, there were drinks left on the table. Since Ray and Chloe both state they were in the bathroom at this time, it is more likely that Ray is the one telling the truth because his testimony lines up more with the physical evidence left at the scene and testimonies from other suspects. A second inconsistency is the voice that Chloe heard calling out. In her testimony, she states “I think I heard a woman’s voice downstairs” (“Suspect Case File”). Equally as important, Beverly claims she “went for a walk at about 2:00 pm” and didn’t come back until she “heard Max call for help at about 3:00” (“Suspect Case
Beverly could have easily came back from her nature walk immediately after 2:00pm and commit the murder of Max Powers along with Dez and Chloe. Beverly also states that,“I came back when I heard Max call for help at about 3:00” (Suspect Case File). In the Preliminary Report it states,“ Max’s body was found at 3:00 in the afternoon”(Preliminary Report). If Max’s dead body was found at 3:00 it wouldn’t make sense that Max would scream for help, in fact he would have been dead. Lastly, Chloe had cotton fiber which was an exact match to the fiber that was scattered around the crime scene. By doing an examination of the cotton fiber found at the crime scene and comparing it to Chloe’s cotton fiber found on her multicolored sweater, it proved to be in fact the exact same cotton fiber that was found at the crime scene. But during Chloe’s testimony she stated, “I went upstairs to take a shower in the bathroom at about 2:30pm”(Suspect Case File). Chloe was not near the crime scene in fact she was in the bathroom taking a shower at 2:30, but the cotton fiber that was on her sweater matched the ones at the crime scene. This clearly, shows that Chloe was at the crime scene at the time of the murder because she used the bathroom alibi to get away with being at the crime scene thus making sense for the cotton fiber to be located at the crime scene. This means that Chloe was at the crime scene during the time of the

Center stage in Kaye Gibbons’ inspiring bildungsroman, Ellen Foster, is the spunky heroine Ellen Foster. At the start of the novel, Ellen is a fiery nine-year old girl. Her whole life, especially the three years depicted in Ellen Foster, Ellen is exposed to death, neglect, hunger and emotional and physical abuse. Despite the atrocities surrounding her, Ellen asks for nothing more than to find a “new mama” to love her. She avoids facing the harsh reality of strangers and her own family’s cruelty towards her by using different forms of escapism. Thrice Ellen is exposed to death (Gibbons 27). Each time, Ellen has a conversation with a magician to cope with the trauma (Gibbons 22-145). Many times Ellen’s actions and words cause it to be difficult to tell that she is still a child. However, in order to distract herself, Ellen will play meaningful games (Gibbons 26). These games become a fulcrum for Ellen’s inner child to express itself. Frequently, Ellen will lapse into a daydream (Gibbons 67). Usually, these daydreams are meant to protect herself from the harsh reality around her. Ellen Foster’s unique use of escapism resounds as the theme of Kaye Gibbon’s Ellen Foster.
The majority of families were once considered perfect. The father went to work everyday, while the mother stayed at home and cared for her two children, “Henry” and “Sue”. The children never fought and the parents were involved in all the community events. Our society has grown to accept that there is no such thing as a perfect family. Eleven-year-old Ellen from the book Ellen Foster, by Kaye Gibbons, grows up in a household where her father is an abusive alcoholic and her mother is too sick to complete everyday tasks. By using her positive assets, and learning from her negative assets, Ellen was able to overcome a lot of challenges throughout the book.
“She was from Pasadena, this six-foot-two marvel of a woman. It was not so much because she was an extraordinary cook- and she would pointedly remind us that she was a cook, not a chef” (Kehoe 1). Julia Child was an extraordinary woman who had a passion for cooking that she didn’t even know could change the way people cook. Julia Child most definitely influenced cooking for generations to come with her passion for cooking and love for food.
At the age of ten, most children are dependent on their parents for everything in their lives needing a great deal of attention and care. However, Ellen, the main character and protagonist of the novel Ellen Foster, exemplifies a substantial amount of independence and mature, rational thought as a ten-year-old girl. The recent death of her mother sends her on a quest for the ideal family, or anywhere her father, who had shown apathy to both she and her fragile mother, was not. Kaye Gibbons’ use of simple diction, unmarked dialogue, and a unique story structure in her first novel, Ellen Foster, allows the reader to explore the emotions and thoughts of this heroic, ten-year-old girl modeled after Gibbons’ own experiences as a young girl.
Being a “good girl” in Antigua during the 1970’s is a lot different than it is in America in 2018. It takes a lot of rules and hard work to fit in and fill the role of the mother. In the short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, the speaker focuses on domesticity and social manners in her guidance to the daughter. Due to the demanding and formidable tone, the short story forces the girl to follow the guidelines given by the narrator.
“Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, is a poem about the relationship between two characters, the mother and daughter, the one that speaks the most is a mother who gives guidance on life to her daughter. The setting appears to be at home where the mother gives direction in things like cooking and washing clothes as living in their Antiguan society. Conflicts between a mother and her daughter, and Western or present day values, are depicted by Kincaid's compelling outline of her association with her mother. The mother is teaching much helpful and practical advice that will enable her daughter to keep her very own place sometime in the future.
Who is Katia Jaimes? I ask myself each day I don’t want to be someone that follows other just to fit in but I also don’t want to change who I am for others. It is hard to be yourself everyday when all you want to do is fit in the world around. Finding yourself is more difficult. Knowing what you love and how those things shape you can help you understand your identity. Finding what you love can be the key to happiness.
