There are many heroes of the Holocaust, but Chiune stood out among all of them. He did what he knew was right, without thinking about the consequences. Chiune Sugihara was willing to do anything to save the lives of others. Chiune Sugihara was born in a small town, Yaotsu, on the island of Honshu. He was born on January 1, 1990, to Mitsugoro, the Emporer’s local tax collector, and Yatsu, a descendant from Samurai ancestry. Chiune had 6 siblings; 5 brothers and 1 sister. Since Chiune was born on the first day of the New Year, his parents believed he would be special. There was a legend that said a spirit named the Snow Woman would appear on cold nights at the first of the year and give a child to a family. He was constantly trying to impress his parents and earn their respect by making very good grades in school. He was taught three main things in school, which are also listed in George Johnston’s article (1): Do not be a burden to others; Take care of others; and Do not expect reward for your goodness. Later in his life, these teachings would come in handy. Chiune and his brother, Toyoaki, would often escape the pressures of schoolwork and go fishing together. When a horse passed by on the main road, they would pluck a piece of hair from their tail, and use it as their fishing lines (Gold 2-3). Out of all the children, Chiune was the strongest swimmer, and he was also one of the best “yakyuu” players, or baseball.
