Depression is like being trapped in a box and not being able to find a way out. Adeline is
treated unfairly by the whole family, is abused by her parents and isn’t allowed to invite anybody over or go to anybody’s house. In this novel, Chinese Cinderella, the author Adeline Yen Mah writes the story as very depressing.
Adeline is told that she isn’t allowed to go over to anybody’s house, or invite anybody
over by her parents. “You are not to invite any of your friends home, or to visit the, in their houses.” (Mah 25) When Adeline moved into her new house, Niang and Father gave her a set of rules. One of the rules were that the children weren't allowed to go anywhere or invite anybody. “ ‘I never asked them here. They know I'm not allowed

to go to their houses so they decided to visit me instead’[...] ‘Go downstairs this minute and tell your hooligan friends to get out! They are not welcome!’ As I hesitated and shuffled my feet, she hit my face yet again. ‘Do you hear me?’ She yelled at the top of her voice. ‘I want them out of the house this minute! Are you deaf? Tell them to get lost and never come again! Never! Never! Never!’ ” (Mah 115) Adeline won her class election and became class president. Her classmates came over to throw her a surprise party at her house. When they came, Father and Niang were home, so they were very displeased with Adeline. This proves that when Adeline want allowed to have anybody come over and Niang would be mad or she would earn a consequence, which seemed unfair to Adeline. Niang and Father treated Adeline very unfairly.
“I’d feel a stab of anguish because I was
always the one excluded.” (Mah 41) Shows that her parents always leave her out. They always asks everybody else to come down to their room, but never her. “I got a basic brown smock made from materials left over from one of Big Sisters garments. Fourth brother, however, received a stylish western outfit with a Peter Pan collar and matching tie and belt, while Little Sister acquired a fashionable knitted pink dress bedecked with ribbons and bows.” (Mah 42,43) This proves that she wasn't cared for or worth the efforts of making nice clothing. All they gave her was scraps from Big Sister’s dress. Adeline was very hurt.
During her childhood, Adeline was abused, verbally and physically. “ No matter what you
consider yourself to be, you are nothing without your father. Nothing! Nothing! Nothing!” (Mah 117) These words that Niang used to speak with Adeline shows that she verbally abused her. She always told her she can’t be anything or that she's worthless and nothing. “She slapped my face so hard I almost fell.” (Mah 114) Here, this proves Adeline being physically abused by her stepmother, Niang. In the book, Adeline was slapped several times and was whipped by her father
occasionally These examples prove why the story is depressing. Adeline gets treated very unfairly, gets abused by her own parents, and was isolated from everybody other than going to school. Adeline Yen Mah wrote this as a depressing story.
It begins with a happy 9-year-old girl named Ling who lives in a hospital complex with her father, a very successful surgeon, and her mother, a well-known doctor. Her mother, known as Mrs. Chang, is very strict, always nagging Ling to act like a woman and to be perfect in almost every way. Ling believes it is because her mother never wanted to have a daughter. Father, on the other hand, Mr. Chang, spent much time with Ling, and got very close to her, teaching her reading and English lessons. He would
A young girl is forced to live with her step-mother and step-sisters after her father and mother die. She becomes the maid of the family, tending to their every need. Eventually there is a ball; she acquires a fairy Godmother, goes to the ball, falls in love with the prince, blah blah blah. All you really need to know is that she has a happy ending. A happy ending. No matter how much suffering she went through in her early years, at the end, it all came together and she had no more worries. And this is the problem. Cinderella is not realistic. It never was and never will be. Watching this movie when I was young made me believe there was a prince waiting for me somewhere. I grew up thinking that life was simple and uncomplicated, that I did not need to worry about the future because there was a man that would provide everything I wanted and needed. But as I got older, I realized this was not the case. I saw many of my friend’s parents divorce, people die, and the world fight with each other. My fantasy died off, and I realized I had to work hard for myself, and not others. The poem Cinderella by Anne Sexton made fun of the ending of Cinderella. She states, “Cinderella and the prince / lived … happily ever after … / their darling smiles pasted on for eternity. / Regular Bobbsey Twins. / That story.” (Sexton 11). Notice who she referenced and how she has a sarcastic tone. Cinderella and the prince smiled for others, trying to convince

...hough she was brutally mistreated, Cinderella was able to find a solution for her problems and children can to. All they have to do is make the effort, try hard enough and success is possible. Adults should pay attention to this and see if Cinderella can help their children keep a positive attitude toward whatever situation they may be in - exaggerated as it may be. Cinderella doesn't only help show one how to overcome adversity it points out good morals, and sends the message that good always prevails. Both of these messages are crucial in a society that is slowly crumbling. All we can do is watch and hope the messages learned from Cinderella make a difference in the lives of Children all around the world.
Pages 94 - 108 discuss the floor and how the girls interacted with one another upon move in day and throughout the semester. The section begins with a description of Alana who felt a lack of connection with the girls on her floor. The other girls on her floor had only hung out with her once, and they used her as a designated driver causing Alana to not want to return to MU her sophomore year. By the end of the year, half the floor were defined as isolates including Alana because they can only claim one other friend (other than roommate) on the floor. Eighteen of these twenty five women were from less privileged families. They are “less likely to have the funds, time, social tastes, and knowledge necessary to successfully engage in college social life” causing them to have trouble fitting in (Armstrong/Hamilton, 96).

Jeannette Walls’ negative relationships with her parents pushed her to flourish in life. Theses negative relationships included her mom not wanting to go to work and make money for food for her family, and instead staying at home while painting. “she’d throw a tantrum and refuse to go to work”. pg 124. Jeannette's mother watched her children freeze and starve, yet displeased when her children wanted her to go work. This extremely exemplifies her mother’s selfishness, instead of at least selling her art supplies she continued to buy more, while her children didn’t eat every day. This act

The word ‘depression’ has become a common everyday word. We hear the term ‘depression’ so frequently today, it’s even used in the contexts of jokes. For example you may hear someone say ‘My favorite show is over, now I have nothing to watch, I’m so depressed’. Obviously this person is not depressed, but we have come to overuse it in our expressions, to the point that is takes away from the seriousness of this disorder. Major depressive disorder is a mood disorder characterized by at least two weeks of depressed mood or loss of interest in nearly all activities, along with sleep or eating disturbances, loss of energy, and feelings of hopelessness (Kosslyn, Rosenberg, 2006). This mood disorder is characterized by a depressed mood, lack of interest in activities normally enjoyed, and feeling of worthlessness. Over the course of two weeks, someone who is suffering with major depressive disorder can experience symptoms such as significant weight loss, daily insomnia or hypersomnia, loss of energy, diminished ability to think or concentration, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide (Kosslyn, Rosenberg, 2006).
They got to school and went to both practices, soccer, and the play. They got done and Mya told Amy to meet her at the outside cafeteria at 12:30, but it was now 12:50, and the play was tonight at 3:40 Mya
Depression is an illness within itself that affects the “whole body”. (Staywell,1998) The body, feelings, thoughts, and behavior are all immensely altered when someone is depressed. It is not a sign of personal weakness, or a condition that can be wished or willed away. For some people depression is just temporary, but for others it can last for weeks, months and even years.
What is depression? Depression is an illness that can take over a person’s life---it can take their happiness and their will to live. This illness can effect adults, teenagers, and even kids. “Depression is an equal opportunity disorder---- it can affect anyone of any group, any background, any race, any gender, and any age. It is the great leveler of all groups and can take the greatest and the smallest of us all and reduce us to the pain and nothingness that is depression (Nydegger 1)”. Depression is an emotion most people may feel they have experienced, but little do they know it’s just the basic emotions we feel. It is important to identify the symptoms of depression, the types of depression, who can get them and how they manifest, in other to be able to treatment them.
