CONSTRUCTED RESPONSE 1. Imagine a world where the future of an entire nation hangs on the decision of one family to have only one child. This is the reality of China's controversial One-Child Policy. This was a social experiment that shaped China's generation and left a lasting impact on the country. China's One-Child Policy was a necessary measure to control population growth, and address social, economic, and environmental obstacles as it aimed to alleviate scarcity of resources, improve living standards, and promote sustainable development in its country. So far, China has made big improvements in its quality of resources ever since this policy was established. In one of the most environmentally stressed areas in China, known as Henan, the development of the One-Child Policy took a toll on its sudden advancement in resources. According to Document C, "The population controls have kept sulfur dioxide emissions down by 17.6% and [reduced] water pollution by 30.8%"(Document …show more content…

For instance, Document E expresses that with the decline in fertility, the policy has "played a significant role in China's demographic transition"(Document E). This has led to the GDP growth per capita to grow one quarter compared to its initial GDP growth per capita, in the last three decades. As a result, better nutrition, rising levels of education, and longer life expectancies have developed because of the rapid GDP growth (Document E). This shows how the One-Child Policy grew the development of China. It has been expressed that because of the One-Child Policy, China has experienced an imbalance in its demographics, but the only imbalance that has been found is in the sex ratio. The gender of a baby in which it is born is not controlled by the One-Child Policy.
