Chimera of Arezzo Sculpture Analysis The work of art I will be analyzing is the Chimera of Arezzo sculpture from the art of the Etruscans. I will be analyzing the the look of this piece of art as well as the axis, palette, texture and stance of the figure. I will also describe what history I can find on the piece and what may have been happening during the time of its creation. As previously stated, I will be analyzing the Chimera of Arezzo. This piece of art is a bronze sculpture in the round that is roughly 80 cm in height. I was not able to find the other dimensions of this sculpture, only the height. The artist is also unknown. The Chimera of Arezzo was found in Arezzo, which is an ancient Etruscan and Roman city in Tuscany. It is believed the Etruscans created this work of art around 400 BCE, over 2000 years ago! The Chimera of Arezzo is a bronze sculpture in the round of a chimera. The bronze is well, bronze color, no additions at all and the texture of the sculpture seems to be smooth over most of the body. This chimera has the body and head of a lion. The claws are clearly defined and going up from them, you can see where each tendon and bone would be if it were a real lion. The realism is striking. Going further up the sculpture, we can see that this chimera is malnourished from the indent and small size of it's stomach area. The rib cage is also well defined as well as some of the hip bones. Going further up, there are some odd sort of spikes that protrude from the back of the lion along it's spine. Perhaps they are there to convey fur or hackles of some sort. Going now to the head of the lion, its mane is beautifully depicted with pieces of bronze bent backwards in a somewhat realistic pattern. The texture ... ... middle of paper ... ...ve been a part of a votive set indicates that it most likely had great significance to the culture and person who owned it. I find it interesting that the sculpture itself depicts a Greek mythological creature even though it has the inscription of an Etruscan god. Perhaps it is a sign of the influence the Greeks had on Etruscan artwork as a whole. The detail of this sculpture suggests it was most likely quite expensive especially if it was in a set. Perhaps nobility of some sort or simply a wealthy commissioner had this piece made. That is my analysis of the Chimera of Arezzo. This piece is stunning and beautifully made. It is a wonderful example of the mix of religions/mythology that comes from cultures mixing. It is personally one of my favorite pieces of art and for a good reason. The durability of clay has brought forth an immense abundance of Greek pottery, a craft mastered by Athenian artists. Archeologists have found hundreds of varieties in creation, shape, function, style, and artwork in Archaic vases. The museum has been blessed with one of these priceless artifacts; it is the duty of this establishment to accumulate as much data as possible surrounding the vase. In first identifying technique, dimensions, and condition, as well as describing shape, ornament, and figural scenery, one may then begin to analyze the vase. This serves the general purpose of understanding where the artifact stands in Greek culture and history. Through the examination and research of figural scenes, it is then possible to compare these to other scenes and styles of the same and other painters. Finally, one can then hypothesize where, why, and how this piece was used.
The human form transcends throughout time persistently present in art. Dating all the way back to Paleolithic human beings our renderings of idealized forms have served many purposes. Though the Neolithic and Paleolithic purpose of these renderings is widely speculative the range of reason for these depictions ranges from idolization and worship to assertion of aristocratic and economic status even to simply serving as statements of self-expression. Amongst ruins and artifacts, sculptures of ancient cultures demonstrate the ways in which humans perceptions of what is aesthetically desirable have progressed. Two idealized sculptures the Woman from Willendorf and the Khafre statue with approximately 21,500 years separating their individual gestations this demonstrate the stylistic progression of idealized imagery through time.
At first glance, the pottery appears to be somewhat simple but it does have a unique appeal. The calm, innocent, and humble appearance while in a painful moment is unprecedented, and it was enough to let the viewer admire and fall in love with this sculpture and its meaning. The distinctive character of glazed terracotta is the smooth, bright, often polychrome cover that has largely contributed to the success of such artifacts, and which recalls, in its plastic compositions, the works by Verrocchio and Filippo Lippi. However, Giovanni‘s art in this sculpture is elegant, remarkable, and a mix of the sophisticated religious themes with antique mannerisms and with the monumental emphasis.
In regards to subject matter, both pieces of sculpture are of leaders, Mycerinus and Kha-merer-nebty II were the pharaoh and queen of Egypt around 2500 BCE., and Caesar Augustus was the Emperor of Rome from September 23, 63 BCE to August 19, 14 CE., shown in this work as a general from Primaport, Italy.

A Faun Teased by Children is a sculpture chiseled out of marble, recrystallized carbonate minerals, in 1616-17 in Rome by Bernini and is also 52 1/8in tall. The negative space forms the letter B. Bernini has signed his sculpture in negative space. This sculpture presents strong perspective effects, a dense and detailed composition, and upward movement of the figures, all strong indications of the Italian Baroque style. (Vatican Museums).” It truly shows the evolution of art sculpting. It is a full size very detailed sculpture of Augustus. It very detailed from his hair showing every curl and split to the small details in his armor that also depicts a story as well is shows the god of the sky looking down on him and the goddess of the earth looking up towards him as they watch the Parthians surrender to him and returning the standards shows the great power that Augustus has, and not just that but also the sculpture itself is a symbol for how Augustus wanted everyone to see him as, as god like. The votive statues were created by worshipers of the ancient Mesopotamian gods. They were crafted out of materials such as limestone, alabaster, gypsum, and other such materials (Votive Statues). These statues were created around 2900 to 2350 BCE at the Square Temple at Eshnunna. The creators of these statues created them in their own likeness to be held at the Square Temple, a place of worship to their gods. It was the worshipers belief that the gods would bless these statues and in turn, bless the creators (Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art, 2004). Worship of the gods was a huge part of the culture of Ancient Mesopotamia, as such these votive statues played a major role in that culture.
This is a copy of the sculpture of Athena Parthenos, dressed in battle attire, that was originally created by Phidias during the period of 447-39 B.C. The statue of Athena Parthenos was to be constructed, not of bronze, but of gold and ivory. The face, arms, and feet of the statue were to be made of ivory and the clothing, of thickly plated gold. The statue was an enormous size that towered thirty-three feet tall. The costly nature of the materials out of which it was designed was intended to overwhelm the viewer, creating a sense of religious awe.
This stone sculpture is a naked human-like figure standing six feet tall. The body is in chiasmos stance with the left leg slightly bent and the left foot slightly behind the right. The head is turned slightly downward and to the right, and its size is approximately 1/6 of the body. The hair is cropped closely to the head with no part. The body has a defined musculature, however the forearms appear to be missing. There is an object behind and to the right of the right leg that is about 2 feet tall and 10 inches wide.

It can be through painting or through sculptures. Some other example of art is music, literature and dancing. For today 's paper we will be talking about art as a sculpture. The two sculptures in this photo are King Sahure and a Nome God and Marble Statue of Dionysos leaning on archaistic female figure (Hope Dionysos). You can find these statues in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. King Sahure and a Nome God is an Egyptian art that was made in 2458-2446 BCE. The artist is unknown. It was during the 5th dynasty and it also belong to the old kingdom. The Marble statue of Dionysos Leaning in the archaistic female figure is a Greco-Roman art. Belonging to the Roman imperial period of the late first century A.D. Augustan or Julio-Claudian period 27 B.C., to 68 AD. It is classified as a stone sculpture and it is made out of marble. The height of the statues is 82 ¾ inches. There is no evidence who was the original artist.
Both of these pieces of art have much in common. Their functions are almost identical. Both were used to mark burial sites and to honor the deceased buried there. The body language of both the pieces’ figures are similar, with one seated and several others standing around them. Neither has color, but unlike the grave stele, the funerary banquet does show some degree of emotion. The figures in the banquet scene have slight smiles. These pieces played an important role in their times, honoring those who had passed on to the afterlife. For both of these people, it was important to memorialize them very similar to our practices today.
We find that, in conclusion, that these pieces are very similar in many ways. They are both originally created in the same style and time period. They are Hellenistic and dramatic, although in their own, individualistic way. Each sculpture was created in different mediums and have different stories. These are both very individualistic pieces of Greco/Roman sculpture that has influenced many artists throughout time and will
