Children do not need to be raised on religion because religion is not necessary for children to learn about morality, the value of life, and their grasp on reality.
Morality in a sense is different yet much more simple when it comes to the teachings of secular parents. This is based on a well-known rule used throughout history and even holds significance today and that is the Golden Rule. By installing empathy, it helps children realize how other people would feel in a certain situation and the need for God is redundant at this point. Indoctrination of religion is the kind of education that does not teach children to question but to believe. What is worse is that the rationality and validity of many religious concepts that kids are indoctrinated with still remain controversial. Thus, it is important to keep children free from religious indoctrination when they are not yet mentally and intellectually mature. Until the early 1960s, religion was accepted in most public school systems across our nation. One of the main purposes for school in early America was for religious purposes (Prothero). Benjamin Franklin stated, "It is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand." Thomas Jefferson stated, "The question isn't what religion is true. The question is what religious traditions do we need to know something about in order to be an effective citizen." Something that can be beneficial to our nation should not be taken away. Even though religion offends some people, it should be allowed in public schools because of its influence on America and western civilizations, and its ability to help form closer relationships.
In conclusion we found that parents' religious affiliation has a positive affect on how they raise their children. Their religion affected the way in which they went about teaching their children morals. It also affected how they structured their family, by a breakdown of the relationships among the family members. Also, parents' religious affiliation allowed them to raise their children in a healthy environment that promoted the best raising of their children that they could ask for. Finally, we did find amongst our findings on the affect of religion on childrearing, that the community can also affect how parents raise their children. Further research could be done comparing the two, as to which factor is more effective.
Throughout history, religion has impacted the lives of millions whether at school, work, with friends, or by some tragedy. Religion can change the way people view their existence. Religion also plays a big role in the infiltration of values into the loves of many young people today. In a recent pole printed in the USA Weekend Paper, “34% of respondents [said] Religion plays a powerful role in their everyday lives.” These student respondents “cited religion as the second-strongest influence in their lives outranked only by parents.” Religion also surpassed the world-renounced media as an influence in their lives (Lerman. 1).
There is a great deal of ongoing debate surrounding the issue of religion in public schools. When you consider the rights of all Americans under the Constitution’s First Amendment, it is outrageous for the United States of America to have “freedom of religion”, and then place excessive limitations on students and teachers in public schools. There are a growing number of people opposed to the idea of religion being in school for a variety of reasons, from which the Government’s solution was to impose restrictions on all religions and deny others their rights in the defense of protecting the rights of a few. Teachers and students of all faiths should be able to attend a public school and freely express their beliefs without these limitations being imposed.
Religion in school can be defined as the practice of any personal religious belief or act in a place of education. To say that religion is a big topic of interest to a lot of people in the United States today is a bit of an understatement. The debate over the separation of church and state has been going on without end for years. With many different perspectives on the matter and even more opinions on how it should be handled. While a few believe that prayer in school is constructive to the development of a child and their faith, others may conclude that it could completely denounce the faith of a child. Because this is an ongoing controversy further research on whether religion should or should not be allowed in public education is usually boils down to two major points the First Amendment and is religion good for our children? Could we potentially have a compromise or could the two opposing sides meet somewhere in the middle?
