Food is one of life’s main fundamentals to sustain viability. It is the continuing growth, maintenance and repair of the body that depends deeply on the energy and nutrients supplied to the body through the food. The nutrients that food provides to the human body is an incredibly, forceful process that keeps people alive and healthy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that over twenty-five million people in America have diabetes; 215,000 of those are children and over sixty-nine percent of all Americans are overweight and obese. This includes childhood obesity, which has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past thirty years. These shocking statistics that reveals that Americans, especially children, are not getting the proper nutrients their body needs. Processed or manufactured food is slowing destroying America’s people and also our economy. Growing up on an island everything was fresh. The vegetables were grown in the back yard, the fish was caught nearby, and the meat was fresh from that morning. Nothing was processed or manufactured. Moving to America, everything was different; my cousins that lived with always ate McDonalds, mac and cheese, etc. All I wanted to eat was rice and beans that my mother would cook. I have always been healthy, and most of the kids around were overweight. Growing up I learned that the food the kids around would eat was not healthy for your body, but I never understood why. American has taken many steps to improve their food production, but why is most of its people sick with related food disease. Americans used to thrive on natural foods for nutritional value, now Americans thrive on processed and manufactured food for just for convenience. Food companies have changed the very way we view nutrition. They have taken chemistry to a whole new level and added what they want it to what we now call food even if that harms our bodies in the long run. Food companies have also caused many hard working farmers to lose their jobs. These food companies have lost insight as to what is truly important in a food product and don’t care if that means taking someone else’s job.
American society has grown so accustomed to receiving their food right away and in large quantities. Only in the past few decades has factory farming come into existence that has made consuming food a non guilt-free action. What originally was a hamburger with slaughtered cow meat is now slaughtered cow meat that’s filled with harmful chemicals. Not only that, the corn that that cow was fed with is also filled with chemicals to make them grow at a faster rate to get that hamburger on a dinner plate as quickly as possible. Bryan Walsh, a staff writer for Time Magazine specializing in environmental issues discusses in his article “America’s Food Crisis” how our food is not only bad for us but dangerous as well. The word dangerous could apply to many different things though. Our food is dangerous to the consumer, the workers and farmers, the animals and the environment. Walsh gives examples of each of these in his article that leads back to the main point of how dangerous the food we are consuming every day really is. He goes into detail on each of them but focuses his information on the consumer.
Most people do not spend their days wondering where their next meal is going to come from, but as the economic situation gets worse and jobs get harder to find it is becoming an every occurring issue in the United States today. Not only will some of us have to worry about with what money will we buy our food, but now we will all start having to worry about where our food is coming from and is it safe for us to consume. We are moving toward a safer tomorrow every day by regulating certain parts of our food supply system. No matter how long it takes, it is clear that there is always opportunity for improvement in making our Nation healthier and safer.
There is an alarming rise in childhood obesity throughout the United States, making it an epidemic in our country. Obesity has become a threat to the health of many children. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12–19 years who were obese increased from 5% to nearly 21% over the same period.(Childhood Obesity Facts, 2015)
Many immigrant families bring with them the foods of their home country and are ready to share them with their children and future generations. However, some do not get the chance to do so as they are pressured to give up their foods for “healthier” and more American dishes. This stems from the ongoing problem of assimilation that has plagued America since the decimation of Native Americans. Nutritionists will make the claim that a great majority of the foods that immigrants from the Caribbean and Latin America are unhealthy and is the cause for chronic disease in immigrants . Asking them to replace their foods is not saying they should replace ingredients but simply switch to a more Americanized meal instead. Food is a gateway that Americans use to pressure immigrants into assimilation. The pressure to assimilate into American culture may be a source of spikes in immigrant health complications; not because the foods themselves are unhealthy.
The documentary Food, Inc. goes inside today’s highly enigmatic industrial food system in the United States. Throughout the documentary, it talks about the many environmental and health consequences that arise from cheap and fast food. This documentary also goes into the topic of food access and how it leads to obesity in many Americans. It went into detail about how food in American is grown and processed, which really caught me by surprise in many ways.
If I were to ask people, “Do you see anything wrong with the food system in America?” the majority of people would respond “No”. After all, America is the best country on Earth. How could the alleged best country on Earth be running on a tainted system that only cares about profit? It was not until I did my own research that I uncover the many, many flaws. After watching the documentary Food Inc., it is very evident that the current system providing the nation with food and food safety is broken. In order to amend the current system, there needs to be changes in three key areas: the government, the producers, and the consumers.
Americans eat food what and when they want to eat. Americans eat affluent the Western diet because food industries manufacture products that they make available at a cheap price by mass production. Since 1950’s, food industries manufactured the Western diet, and the food choice has been changed that Americans become to choose food which is more inexpensive, convenient, ans tastable. However, the change makes Americans consume too much the Western diet and provides them some health issues. The Western diet includes too much of sugar, salt, and fat. In addition, farmers inject their livestock artificial chemicals to grow faster. Therefore, Americans easily get Western diseases, which include heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity, hypertension, and stroke. Although they may understand the dangers of living off a high calories, saturated fat diet, the challenges of going off the Western diet overwhelm Americans to the point that they forgo any radical changes to their daily consumption of food. Going off the Western diet provides Americans challenging problems: challenging of money, time, and advertisements of problems.
To begin with, according to Pollan consumption of highly processed food is very high in America. Pollan says, “They [processed foods] contain much less water, fiber and micronutrients, and generally much more sugar and fat”(12). Pollan believes the American population does not consume enough real food; therefore, they constantly look for something to satisfy their hunger. Fiber and micronutrients in whole foods give people satisfaction after consuming them. Processed foods are significantly low in micronutrients and fiber. People do not feel satisfied after eating processed foods; consequently, they overeat the foods that negatively impact their health. Processed foods in America are sold at a minimum price, making it easier and more accessible to consume foods that are dangerous to the human’s health.
Jamie Oliver’s lecture, “Teach every child about food” from 2010, opens up with the scary truth that Americans are putting upon themselves: “Diet-related disease is the biggest killer in the U.S.” It is said that the children of today will have a life span ten years shorter than their parents because of the food they are eating. Oliver continues by sharing the statistic that in ten years this country will be spending about $300 billion a year on obesity costs. Information like this is proving that money is being put towards all of the wrong things.
For a long time, obesity has been one of the most controversial issues in America. The agricultural industry, fast food industry, and meat production are all main factors of why obesity has struck america the most. While many argue that the food industries are the reason for american obesity, many people realize that it is actually the individual who is liable for their own health problems. Society has its own perspective of food, from how much to eat, where to eat, and how our food is made. Along with Kevin are 3,000 Americans who die every year from foodborne pathogens, and the numbers are increasing.; yet even with activists who stand up for food- safety bills, these food productions fail to realize the point, the food is not safe, although it is cheap and economical it is not beneficial to any factor. If companies would use the obvious alternative; open, nature filled farms or pastures, not only would the animals benefit from being in a natural, safe, and healthy environment but the customer as well.
