Within the 21st century’s modernised community there are numerous types of family structures prevalent within today’s society, two of those being childless and sole parent family structures. In general terms, according to dictionary.com, a family is “a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not”. Comparatively, in spite of both being family structures when compared against each other specific similarities and differences arise due to the family’s defining features and makeup. The family structures of a childless and sole parent family structure consist of specific aspects and factors which define these two structures. Regarding childless family structures, according to www.edu.pe.ca it’s defined as “a group of people from all kinds of backgrounds and all walks of life who, for whatever reason, have never had children”. …show more content…

The required satisfaction of specific needs is a necessity amid both structures to ensure the healthy wellbeing of the individuals in the family group. As seen in childless families, their need for employment and an adequate standard of living is satisfied as in Australia 49% have full-time employment and 48% earn more than $50,000 per annum (ACS, 2002), and a survey by ACS report that 60% conclude to participating monthly in leisure activities. Moreover, another commonality is that both family structures require emotional stability, strong support system, safety and wellbeing so members within the family adopt specific roles to ensure that these aspects are satisfied, as seen in sole parent families where the parent/guardian adopts the role of both parents (carer/provider) for the dependants. Consequently, through the shared necessity of specific needs required to be satisfied both childless and sole parent families
