A Questionable Future For the Impoverished:Poverty and Its Links to College Success

Ultimately,each individual has the ability to determine whether he or she succeeds in society,regardless of the class in which he or she is born. However ,there are major determining factors which play a vital role in the outcome and quality of success that each individual obtains. Living below the poverty line for some individuals can mean an unpromising future ,with no means of obtaining a college education and or formal job. On the other hand ,living below the poverty line for some individuals can mean motivation to pursue things that others in there same socioeconomic class view as impossible,such as paying college tuition or having the perseverance …show more content…

Although they belong to the same class ,success is a state of mind for the impoverished ; yet for those individuals who are born into the elite class of society ,success is an inheritance, a promising option,and a state of class.

As the old cliche saying states “You can’t help where you’re from,however you can help where you’re going.’ The economic status concerning poverty evokes the question of “ Can individuals really help where they are going ?’*sk* According to researcher Sarah Kendig, “Childhood poverty can heavily impact an individual's transition into adulthood .Furthermore ,if one is born into poverty,he or she primarily has no stable means of financial support ,which is a very unstable start for a child .Once the child reaches school age ,success then depends on factors such as the student’s grades, the student’s location ,and the availability of scholarships in which the student is eligible for “ …show more content…

According to this study, even with high poverty levels ,and low funding, students were able to achieve academic success. So regardless of the two factors which are low funding and high poverty levels this study asserts that academic success is possible because of factors such as strong leadership,use of available resources,rigorous academic curriculum; support of teachers; counseling ; access to college information,and the use of accountability standards.According to this study, all of the factors combined foster a college going culture ,which promotes college matriculation***. The assertion in this study identifies two totally different factors than I did in determining the relationship between poverty and success.Secondly,a source that I incorporated into my research is a source by *** that reiterates positive factors that affect the success of students regardless of the economic barrier called poverty.
