Adoption is a way of providing new families for children who cannot be brought up by their birth parents or within their birth family. When someone is granted an adoption order it transfers all legal responsibility and rights to the adoptive parents. Adoption is a lifelong commitment to the child or children who become a full member of the adoptive family. Adopting a child takes a major responsibility. When considering of adopting a special needs child or children, families need to know the process of adopting, outcomes, the health conditions, health care needs. To adopt you must contact a licensed adoption agency in your home state and request a home study. A home study is home study process that is intended to prepare and educate you for the placement of a child in your home. You must take classes, obtaining to adopting children, completing paperwork on child abuse and federal clearance forms, and having a social worker visit you in your home. Home Study, is a legal document that approves your family to adopt a child and would also describe the special needs you feel are a good fit for your family. Adopting process has many factors such as what sex you want to adopt, special needs child or no special needs, background of the child, age etc. Adopting with a special need child, it is important for each family to consider what special needs they feel equipped to help with and which are the best match for their family. Often family members draw upon their own personal experiences when making this decision. They may have a special need, raising a biological child with special challenges or they may have grown up with a special needs child as a sibling, close relative, or family friend. When she spoke to him about adopting, he gave her some information and she went from there. After talking with her husband, she contacted the agency, La Vida. Merry received a call back from the agency and did a phone interview. During the interview conversation, the caseworker said,” I think we’ve found the perfect home for this little girl.” After sixteen months of preparation and doing the requirements in China she could bring her seven-year-old blind daughter Ashleah from China. Merry and Marty received a great amount of helped from Elizabeth, Ashleah foster parent in China. By Merry being a teacher, she helped Ashleah with Braille and caught her up on her academics. Ashleah became one of the top student in high school and received an award for Academic Excellence Award for having a 4.0 GPA. The Article, “Adopting a Blind Child from Overseas,’ has a great impact on me as a student of Early Childhood Education because reading this Merry and Marty never gave up on wanting to foster a child with a visual disability and it helps me to have a drive to not give up on wanted to help or working with children regardless of the child’s challenges they may have.
