Over the past 100 years, Chevrolet has changed dramatically, since the first vehicle was produced and has evolved into the modern day vehicles used around the world. Chevy has advanced from steam powered cars into the current gas guzzelers used today.
In 1911, a man named William Durant formed what was originally called the Chevrolet Motor Company. Durant was the founder of General Motors, the 1911, 1912, and 1913 Chevrolet Series C Classic Six was the first model that Chevrolet sold

In a final move to regain control, Durant offered GM stockholders five shares of Chevrolet stock for every one share of GM stock. Though GM stock prices were exorbitantly high, the market interest in Chevrolet made the five-for-one trade irresistible to GM shareholders. With the sale, concluded on May 2, 1918, Durant regained control of GM. Just two years later, however, he was pushed out for good by Pierre S. DuPont, whose family’s powerful chemical company had begun investing in the fledgling auto industry by buying GM stock in 1914. Pierre DuPont subsequently rose to the chairmanship of GM’s board and became president in 1920. Chevrolet's famous series 490 auto was also new in 1918. This model was designed to compete directly with Ford's Model T. The 490 designation was based on the price the car was to sell for which was also the amount a Model T had been selling for. Mr. Ford immediately lowered the price of a Model T after the Series 490 was announced. In 1920, Chevrolet was the third most popular brand of automobile. While Ford and Dodge still held the top positions in sales, Chevrolet was gaining ground with new designs. In 1925, they created the Chevrolet Superior, which sold for an affordable $650. The first six-cylinder engine was created by Chevrolet engineers in 1929.
The 1930s and 1940s were a time of great innovation for Chevrolet. During this time, they were responsible for many important automotive inventions, including hydraulic brakes, column shifts, independent front suspension, and V-grilles. The company manufactured its first station wagon in 1939. Then, in 1940, they entered the convertible market with an affordable, power top convertible
