Humans are curious people, knowing how things work and knowing how things fit together has always interested our minds. When we are presented with an idea that we don’t know we want to solve it. That is exactly the purpose of mystery and detective stories. Mystery stories capture our attention and makes us strive to find out and understand the story and this is why we keep coming back to them. Like many other genre of books mystery books has their own way of getting the reader’s attention and get them hooked on the story. To achieve this the stories keep building up suspense and thrill till they get to the climax of the story. At the start of t, a mystery or detective book the author usually tells the reader the problem or mystery. Like something was stolen or someone was killed, to peak the reader’s attention. Then they start to build up the story by introducing the clues to try to solve the mystery. An example of this is “Chee’s Witch” by Tony Hillerman. In this story Chee, the detective has to investigate the recent deaths that have been going on in the town. At the start of the story Hillerman only starts off with “Corporal Jimmy Chee of the Navjo Tribal Police” (412). Hillerman only starts off with small facts in this case introducing Chee. Laster on in the story is when he starts to build up the suspense. “He is the only one they think is the witch” (Hillerman 416). Not every mystery story is the same each one has its own style to make it special. Each mystery story had different characters, different clues, different plot twists. If two murder mystery stories are compared next to each other, there would be almost no similarity other than the plot of the murder. Even if one knows all the clues and knows who did the murder and why they did it in the first book. They cannot say the same thing about the second book because there are different clues and different outcome. Since not all mystery stories are the same one can get the thrill again and the suspense of solving the mystery. Even after we read the book and know how it turns out we something go back and re read it. This is because when we read it the first time we find out the answer to the mystery but we might have not solved it all the way. One might go back and re read it to see if they missed any clues that were crucial to the mystery. Since at the end of most mystery stories the author tells the reader the answer, it is sometimes hard for the reader to get to the answer alone before they are told. So going back would give the reader more time to solve the mystery themselves. Another reason is that some mystery stories don’t even tell the reader the answer to the mystery. The author leaves that up to the reader to decide based on what they thought of the clues and events that took
