School is a great place for students to go and get an education, yet it has its flaws. Such as cheating, Cheating is happening all over the us in all different stages of school from elementary to the college level. As Abc news put it in their article there is a cheating crisis in America's schools. The reason students are educated is so they have a successful life containing a good job, wealth, and happiness. If students don't get good grades they won't get any of those things. So there is immense pressure to succeed in school. In a six-month investigation, Primetime voyaged to many schools across the US to see how much students are cheating, and why. They found most students do it and that students do it to keep up. Joe is a student at a top college in the Northeast who admits to cheating regularly. Like all of the college students who spoke to Primetime, he wanted his identity obscured. In Joe's view, he's just doing what the rest of the world does. "The real world is terrible," he told the interviewer. "People will take other people's materials and pass it on as theirs. Me personally the second I walk into my first period class I have at least 3 students ask me for homework so that they can copy it. Its amazing that students don’t even feel it is wrong anymore its just what everyone does so they do it to. Cheating has grown more and more of a big problem. Schools need to crack down on it. Its only going to get worse. If the punishments are raised and teacher look for cheating more it will help this problem severely. Cheating is an unfair, disgraceful, and unethical thing to do. It needs to be fixed. The Simple solution can go a long way.
If a teacher is unfamiliar with current advancements in the digital world, it is possible that they will miss the most obvious of cheaters. Because the student is never punished or caught, they assume the teacher does not consider it cheating. In some cases, schools are responsible for the rise in cheating because of the way curriculum is presented. In an article written by the Atlantic, a teacher received an anonymous letter from a successful college student stating that he had cheated all throughout high school. He told the author he cheated “because the grade [he]would have otherwise been given was not reflective of [his] true learning” (Lahey). In other words, he felt the teachers were giving him exams that were not accurate representations of the material he had learned. If students are giving themselves excuses for their cheating, that feeling of guilt will subside, and they will not view the action as wrong. One of the main reasons behind this would be how cheating is much more tolerated by teachers and parents. Teachers know that students cheat just as much as students know that they cheat. Teachers even see it going on, but they just ignore it. I have seen students in the hallway or at lunch just copying someone’s work and not even trying to hide it because they think they will not get in trouble. One teacher of mine was talking in front of the class just about two weeks ago, and he was talking about cheating. He said that he walked by some kids in the hallway in the morning copying each other's answers, and he says he sees is amongst students almost every day. He never puts a stop to it though. The majority of parents in today’s world think that their children are darling angels, and refuse to see the fact that they are doing something wrong. I went to grade school with a couple of boys who were just plain bullies and were the only ones who caused all kinds problems. Anytime the situation was brought up to those boys’ parents, the parents would get very offended and believe that their children were doing nothing wrong. Both of these boys always had their mother help with their homework. but I know she did more than just a little bit of help. I was friends with their sister, and once I witnessed the mother actually telling one of the boys
I would prefer that students don't cheat. Yes, they really are mostly cheating themselves, so fine. But it also reflects poorly on the community. Rationally or not, what particularly irks me is that it is disrespectful: of me, of their fellow students, of the university, of the institution of learning, and of themselves. Anddid I mentionof me? It is particularly irksome when their cheating implies (reminds?) that I am a fool.
Situations of cheating have seemed to become more and more commonplace when the student is bored by the subject material, poor teaching and or feels they have no use for the knowledge. Kohn even states in his article, “cheating is more common when students experience the academic tasks they’ve been given as boring, irrelevant, or overwhelming.” This infers that if a student were attending a school interested in learning about art, the student maybe more inclined to cheat in a business accounting class due to the fact the student would find the subject material irrelevant to them and their future. Students seem to be less inclined to cheat and it “is relatively rare in classrooms where the learning is genuinely engaging and meaningful to students and where a commitment to exploring significant ideas hasn’t been eclipsed by a single-minded emphasis on “rigor”” (Kohn). To simplify everything mentioned above; students are inclined to cheat in school when they are disinterested in the subject material and or are overwhelmed by in assignment or finally the result in a poor teacher. Cheating and plagiarism have their own history. Many people believe it’s a way to get around certain challenges that we feel unable to defeat. When friends see their peers cheating, they think about their friendship, and therefore, they decide to remain silent. Not allowing teachers to know about cheating can affect your friend, people around you, and even you. Students should alert teachers about cheating, because it’s an act to save your friends, others and yourself.
What amazed me though was the 125 Undergrads from Harvard that got caught cheating. These are the people that supposedly are the brightest and best student in the United States, maybe even the world and they are doing this. Many people would kill to have a spot at Harvard and have that experience, but these people are taking their spots. Yet, this number can be misleading when there are probably 50,000 undergrads at least attending. Most may be doing the right thing. From plagiarism to dishonesty, many high school teenagers cheat just to get a good grade in a class or they simply are bad at that particular subject. They cheat on tests, quizzes, and even on big projects. No matter the circumstance, if you are ever to be caught, you should be served with the toughest of consequences. You should not be trusted. You should have any second chances. After all, even if you don’t get caught for cheating, you are not learning anything the class has to offer.

Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. Everyone has cheated on something at some point in their life, whether it is in a game, on a test, or in a relationship, everyone has done it. Cheating is anything that involves breaking a rule, or getting an unfair advantage. Schools are one of the most popular places people cheat. Many people down play cheating and use excuses like, “He shouldn’t have let me see his paper,” or, “I am just using my resources wisely.” But, what causes people to cheat? Students cheat in school because of laziness, high standards or pressure to do well, and misunderstanding.
We might want to first follow that question with another question. What is cheating and why do so many people do it? Most people would agree that cheating is deceitful and one who obtains answers by cheating is not practicing good integrity. We could further add that cheating also prevents the student from having to put in long hours of studying and preparation. Recent technology has made this “time saving method” even more efficient.
Also they are the ones to blame for their own actions because they don’t want to work hard, and they believe if they don’t cheat they will not pass or be successful. Ultimately it all is affiliated with motivation. Motivation is the key to all success in life, if someone is motivated to do something, they will try pretty dang hard to accomplish that goal throughout their life or schooling career. But in high school, people tend to lose motivation as the semester goes on. They get lazy, start making excuses, and either resort to cheating, or they don’t do their assignments at all.
There are generally three factors for the drastic increase in cheating and plagiarizing today. The first of those is the unpredictable amount of information that is available online to students everywhere. Which in turn makes it more difficult for the guilty plagiarizers to be caught, making it easier for them to get away with cheating and willing to do it again. The third apparent reason for todays prevalent cheating and plagiarism is the fact that the environment for students alike has become very competitive.
The above discussion shows that there are many effects of cheating in exam. Therefore, schools should come up with strategies on how to reduce cheating in schools. The teachers can inform the students about the effects of cheating in exam. They should also come up with harass punishment if a student is caught cheating. This will reduce the cases of cheating, and students will be fully equipped for the job market. Therefore, students should know cheating in exams is bad.
