School is a place for students to learn and to gain knowledge. It helps student to prepare for the future. School is a competitive environment in which students compete among themselves to get good GPA and high rank in school to be able to get scholarships or get accepted in good college. To achieve those goals, students need to score high on the tests and assignments in all of their classes. Top students spend hours of their free time to study the course materials and do their homework. However, not everyone is the same. Some students choose to cheat to get good grades. Whenever, the word “cheating” is mentioned, people always assume it is a negative act to do. But what exactly is cheating? According to the article “Cheating” by D’Arcy Lyness, PhD, the definition of cheating is “when a person misleads, deceives, or acts dishonestly on purpose.” In other words, cheating in academics means students deceive the teachers. People believe under any circumstances, cheating in academic is an unacceptable act that needs to be avoided at all cost. Students that cheat will have to face many consequences. In contrast, cheating in academic can help a lot for students. Cheating does have its positive side if people give it a second thought. Cheating in academic is an acceptable act to do. People blame students are the one at fault because they want to get good grades without putting effort into it or they cheat because they feel like they cannot pass the test (Lyness, 2013). As a result, students are scared that they cannot maintain their grades so they have to cheat to meet the requirements to get in their major. People tend to blame students for being lazy and do not take school seriously. However, they do not understand the pressure that students have to face and dealing with. To conclude, cheating in academic is not a bad thing. Majority say it is wrong to do, but to some extent, they should realize and consider about cheating. It is a way to learn and to secure good grades. If people look at cheating in a positive way, they will see that it is helpful a lot.

That stomach churning feeling of guilt for many seems to appear as a small price to pay when completing an act of academic dishonesty. Colleen Wenke wrote an essay on cheating eighteen years ago called “Too Much Pressure”. In the past fifty years, the number of students who admit to cheating has increased fifty to seventy percent(Gaffe). Many people wonder what leads the students to make this unjust decision. Today, the reason for a rise in cheaters is because of how easy it has become, leading many students to the false conclusion that they aren’t breaking any rules; It is simply viewed as a shortcut to success in the classroom and beyond.

Situations of cheating have seemed to become more and more commonplace when the student is bored by the subject material, poor teaching and or feels they have no use for the knowledge. Kohn even states in his article, “cheating is more common when students experience the academic tasks they’ve been given as boring, irrelevant, or overwhelming.” This infers that if a student were attending a school interested in learning about art, the student maybe more inclined to cheat in a business accounting class due to the fact the student would find the subject material irrelevant to them and their future. Students seem to be less inclined to cheat and it “is relatively rare in classrooms where the learning is genuinely engaging and meaningful to students and where a commitment to exploring significant ideas hasn’t been eclipsed by a single-minded emphasis on “rigor”” (Kohn). Cheating is a big issue that has reached the most competitive campuses around the United States. It is increasing more and more with the new technology that we have in the 21st century because students have easy access to many sources of information. Cheating is something all students have done at some point in their lives, but as they reach a higher academic level, they are faced with more rigorous consequences that can affect their futures in many different ways. Cheating might be seen as an easy way to obtain a good grade, get into a good college, or maintain scholarships or financial aid, but the consequences could affect the life and the future of the student.

A recent survey has shown an overwhelming majority of students have cheated. They, however, have justified their actions and do not believe that is a “big deal” (Cheating is a Personal Foul, 1999).
The system of cheating has crucially been an issue in the past years, students have now gone to the farthest extent to achieve the better grade just to pass the class. Mari Pearlman in the article, “Cheating in School Reflects Basic Confusion in Society,”(August 22,1999) published in the LA Times, suggest that cheating in schools has given the wrong idea when it comes to cheating, not only in school but indeed in a workplace. Students have become more dishonest, and unworthy of actually doing the work. By cheating these issues can affect in the long run, emotionally, and even affect the future of careers.
Cheating in every situation is wrong due to the fact that if we get caught we get in trouble. It isn’t exactly the moral or ethical fact to me personally, it’s more of the issue that if I get caught I get in trouble and end up feeling degraded, although I should have felt that from the start. For some students it doesn’t even faze them. I’m not saying that everyone one who cheats are an awful person, because that would mean just about every student at your average school would be, including me.

Cheating is anything that involves breaking a rule, or getting an unfair advantage. Schools are one of the most popular places people cheat. Many people down play cheating and use excuses like, “He shouldn’t have let me see his paper,” or, “I am just using my resources wisely.” But, what causes people to cheat? Students cheat in school because of laziness, high standards or pressure to do well, and misunderstanding.
From a young age we are taught the differences between right and wrong, but as we get older the line between moral and immoral is often blurred.
