Charter Schools Advantages

Charter schools are unique. They are open to any student who wishes to attend. Unlike traditional public schools, they are held accountable for achieving educational results or their school will be shut down. So they don’t have bureaucratic rules and many of the restrictions that other public schools have to deal with. It is a public school that is independently run and is granted flexibility in its operations. Charter schools are governed by each local community. The local community usually includes teachers and parents. As public schools, they are the only schools that allow parents or community groups to reinvent the public school system. For the majority of parents, they want a positive atmosphere that will encourage their child’s

growth. The child’s emotional and intellectual growth is very important to a parent. They want them to be able to learn what is necessary to live and survive in this world. Parents want to be involved in children’s education, but the majority of them are not familiar with what their children should be learning. But charter schools are different because teachers work with parents and in turn it helps them learn more about what children should be learning. Charter school allows them to be more engaged in their child’s education. Parents that want to achieve these education aspirations for their children should look into charter schools to fill their educational goals.
Unlike traditional public schools, charter schools provide alternatives.

Charter schools improve education by offering students more creative approaches to learning and by giving parents more choices. In states with charter laws, students don’t have to go to their assigned school in their local school district and can enroll in any charter school. That means a student is not stuck in their zone school. They allow students from any other area the ability to enroll, but not everyone gets in because there is only a limited amount of seats. Since charter schools are granted more flexibility, they can develop more innovative programs. Effective school leadership, which includes instructional leadership, team goal-setting and distributed leadership, is one of the most important factors influencing teacher behavior and student outcomes (Wei, Patel, and Young 5). So the teachers are free to try different ways of thinking outside the box to help students learn and achieve at higher levels. Most charter schools are small in size where they know and care about each

other.
American students aren’t developing skills like students in other countries. Their science, math and language skills are lacking and is sad to hear, but is the current reality. When American students were being compared to students from around the world, it was disappointing because students are not doing as well as they should be in their level of class. While U.S. schools struggled to reach even an average score on a key international exam for 15 year olds in 2012, BASIS Tucson North, an economically modest, ethnically diverse charter school in Arizona, outperformed every country in the world, and left even Shanghai, China’s academic gem in the dust (Kronholz). The problem is the United States public school system and the problem has nothing to do with the students because they’re just like any of those students in different countries. The public schools are obviously not doing their job and the students are the one that is suffering. Our students need the skills and knowledge to be competitive in this world. Without the passionate, knowledgeable and persistent teachers to teach the students, their future will consist of low paying jobs. So which school a student goes to will make all the difference. The best United State schools are the ones that implement innovative programs.
Some charter schools do very well. On average, they do better at educating poor students from low income families. Low income student usually does poorer than other students. There is a group called The Houston YES Prep Public Schools, and they are a group of ten public charter schools. They work mainly with students from low income families. Teachers there pay special attention to students that are struggling and works with them so the students don’t have a chance to fall behind. Charter schools helped English language learners and poverty students achieve more than traditional public school. Educators at these charter schools can work effectively on educating English language learners because of the level of self governing given to them. In public school everything is usually taught in English, but the educator in the charter school uses native language instruction programs to assist the students in learning. Among charter schools adding new campuses, the percentage of incoming students whose first language is not English shot up from just under 30 percent two years ago to 55 percent in 2013 (Peyser). The English language learners are growing and will continually grow in the United States. Without a doubt, English language learners make up a good percentage in charter schools. They may excel in one area and need lots of support in another. With that population growth there needs to be a huge emphasis on improving learning for these English language learners.
Charter schools serve students better than public schools because charter schools have a lot to offer.

They are better in areas such as quality of teaching, academic standards, extra help for students, individual attention from teachers, discipline and accessibility. Parents have the option of choosing whichever school they want and don’t have to be restricted to a school. I have friends that don’t want to bring their children to their local school but have no other choice than to bring them. Also, many of them have special interest classes. This allows students a choice to choose classes such as the performing arts that will help offer new insights with their career choice. Charter schools are something that parents definitely should consider when choosing schools if they are not happy with where their children is at. They are excellent schools that provide unique learning environment that would benefit their child. In the documentary “The Lottery”, Geoffrey Canada said “You get charter for 5 years. One of the great things about charter school is that it is totally accountable. If you don’t own a decent school, you will not get your charter renewed and essentially your school will be closed.” From listening to what he said in the documentary we know that ineffective schools will be closed and good charter schools with improved achievement will stay open and continue to

grow.
