Charlie Joe Jackson’s Guide to NOT Reading by: Tom Greenwald
The exposition starts with a character named, Charlie Joe Jackson. He is in middle school and he hates reading. This all started when Charlie had to read a book for his language arts teacher; the book was called Billy’s Bargain. Billy’s Bargain was about the pitcher who throws a no hitter and made a bargain with the devil. Charlie does what he always does, and that was read the back of the book, the first chapter, the last chapter, and the inside flaps. Charlie always took shortcuts when it came to reading. In the rising action, Charlie has a friend named Timmy, and Timmy and Charlie have known each other for about two years. They have always made this deal if Charlie bought Timmy an ice cream sandwich, Timmy would tell Charlie what Billy’s Bargain was about. But one day Charlie see’s the look in Timmy’s eye’s, which was the look of blackmail. As he walked up he asked Timmy how was your day. He said, “Okay.” then he said, “ I’m really hungry today… I could eat one, or two, or three ice cream sandwiches.” Guess what Charlie had to do. He bought TImmy three ice cream sandwiches just so Timmy could tell Charlie about the book. This was the climax. The next day he went to the library and looked up the word blackmail. Under the word blackmail, Timmy’s picture was there. This was the falling action. He saw the librarian and she was an old friend of Charlie’s. In the first grade she tried over and over again to make him read but he didn’t. To Charlie she was evil because she was still librarian. The resolution is that, Charlie Joe has had a lot of devised ways to get out of reading. He has also made up a lot of tips, that can get you out of reading in a different way....

Solveig, her brother, the crown prince, her older sister, and her army of warriors, waits for news of the battle her father is in, and to find out the winner. However, as winter keeps on, and the storms getting stronger each day, the ice refuses to break. This means Solveig and the rest are trapped! The climax is when, horrible acts of treason make it clear that a traitor is among them. A spiteful breeze begins to go through the frozen ice walls, and a anxious man turns the prisoners of winter against one another. The falling action is whoever is in charge with protecting the king's children were all suspects of being the traitor. The siblings must choose their allies wisely. Solveig is trying to find who is trying to destroy the crowned prince and the kingdom. This was the resolution.
Ideas- The main idea in this book changes all throughout it. There is one idea that goes throughout the whole story which has a protagonist and an antagonist. Charlie is the protagonist. The antagonist… high school. This develops miraculously throughout the book. Starting off with his first day, to the homecoming game where he meets Sam and Patrick, to his last days of being a freshman. “And I’m Patrick. And this is Sam” pg-19. At first Charlie is worried about high school and his english teacher Bill fixes that quickly. He meets his two new best friends Sam and Patrick at a football game. These are not the only objects of importance the narrator stores in his beloved briefcase, but they are the most encompassing of his story. In the novel’s final chapter, when the narrator is trapped in the dark sewer and must burn the papers from his briefcase to see his way, everything goes. First his high school diploma, then the Sambo doll, followed by a threatening anonymous note. Everything he burns from the briefcase—the “important papers” the superintendent spoke of in Chapter one—is a symbol of the narrator’s plight as the forces pulling his strings run him around.
Often, when a story is told, it follows the events of the protagonist. It is told in a way that justifies the reasons and emotions behind the protagonist actions and reactions. While listening to the story being cited, one tends to forget about the other side of the story, about the antagonist motivations, about all the reasons that justify the antagonist actions.

What the author is doing is letting the reader foreshadow. A technique which creates suspense, a vital element in any action story. The author then explained what was being hinted at;
Suffering from the death of a close friend, the boy tries to ignore his feelings and jokes on his sister. His friend was a mental patient who threw himself off a building. Being really young and unable to cope with this tragedy, the boy jokes to his sister about the bridge collapsing. "The mention of the suicide and of the bridge collapsing set a depressing tone for the rest of the story" (Baker 170). Arguments about Raisinettes force the father to settle it by saying, "you will both spoil your lunch." As their day continues, their arguments become more serious and present concern for the father who is trying to understand his children better. In complete agreement with Justin Oeltzes’ paper, "A Sad Story," I also feel that this dark foreshadowing of time to come is an indication of the author’s direct intention to write a sad story.

The type of narration, the plot’s rising action, and the overall imprint that is left on the reader, pushes this book above and beyond. Whaley creates a picture for the reader by using third- person omniscient point of view. This method helps the reader better understand the main characters. The rising action development was extremely easy to follow. The descriptions of the characters and the background information helps explained how the story was laid out. Also, the author seemed like he wanted the reader to realize the purpose of the three-way friendship. It represented how a relationship allows everyone to learn from their flaws and unwarranted decisions from other’s reactions. This book is truly unique, from the composure to the character’s
The author uses short, simple sentences that manage to say a lot in a few words. The author also uses imagery. He also puts in his book references to historical events. These references increase the understanding and appreciation of Billy's story by suggesting historical and literary parallels to the personal events in his life. The novel does not have smooth transitions from one event to the next.
The complexity of the plot starts when the reader is introduced to a man lost in a cave and his source of light goes out and continues when the man realizes that “starving would prove [his] ultimate fate” (1). In the story “Popular Mechanics” the author, Raymond Carver, demonstrates how the feelings and actions of the characters set the plot and the conflict. The author shows how the feelings and actions led to the conflict and tragedy at the end by positioning words in a way to demonstrate the dark and eerie plot. The author manipulates words to exhibit the feelings of the mother and the father. Carver maneuvers how each of the character’s actions also contribute to the conflict at the end. The actions and feelings of each character play an important part of the plot.
The irony comes into play when the truth starts to unravel and Jack finds out what really happened to him as a child and why he does not know his parents. After some coincidental events, all the main characters end up in the same room. When Lady Bracknell hears Ms. Prism’s (the woman Jack hired as his nieces governess) name she immediately asks to see her. She continues to say that Ms. Prism had wandered off with a baby years ago and asks what came about of that. Ms. Prism continues the dialog to explain how she misplaced a baby that was in her bag at a train station. Jack, thinking he might have been that very baby, retrieves the bag he was found in as an infant in which Ms. Prism identifies by some distinguishing marks to have been her own. Jack realized the woman that had been teaching his niece was his mother. But then Lady Bracknell explained that she was not but Lady Bracknell’s poor sister Mrs. Moncrieff was.
They had a narrator read all about Scott, the teenager who is being charged with DUI. The narrator would explain how bright Scott’s future was. What he would go on to accomplish and how he was a ontrack senior in college. Now that is all gone. His future was shattered because of the choice he made to drink and drive. His job he had lined up, gone now because of the years he would spend in prison. His plan to have a family? Now shattered because how would he care for a family until he is released from prison. Each individual fact they gave about how the accident ruined Scott’s future touched the audience. Who would want to go through that all because of one dumb decision to drink and drive. This was a bad time because Charlie begins to start going “bad” again which means he starts to have flashbacks, and he gets really depressed. He saves Patrick from a fight at school which is kind of like a forgiveness from his friends to let him hang out and talk to them again. Charlie helps Sam get into a college and soon all of his friends leave to go to college. He gets bad again and ends up going to the hospital. When Sam and Patrick come over to Charlie's house, this is like closure to Charlie and they drive through the tunnel for the closing page. I think that the author did a very good job in choosing when the events in the book would happen. It seemed like a teenagers life and he changed it up some so that the reader wouldn't get so bored.
