Charlie Hebdo has defined a new meaning for terrorism and freedom of speech. Speaking with local *Parisians’, the Charlie Hebdo attack in January has changed the face of their city. Military wander the streets carrying their assault rifles, readying for the next attack. The Crimson alert is no laughing matter; the French, along with the rest of the world are worried. But Charlie Hebdo, a now well-known publication, especially since the attacks, was not the first time where cartoonists were murdered for their satirical take on political and religious life. Over the course of history, many others in the same genre have suffered similar fates. Let’s take a look at a few… El Eternauta, created in 1957 by a writer named Hector German Oesterheld,
and artist Francisco Solano Lopez in Argentina; found themselves in an unsettling scenario years into their career. In the 1976 dictatorship, Oesterheld decided that after 57 years of writing, it was time to make some changes to his original work. El Eternauta was reworked to incorporate a totalitarian future and a protagonist revolutionary leader to rise up against the dictator (aliens). The Argentinian military began searching for Oesterheld who went into hiding and continued to publish. Unfortunately for his four daughters and their husbands, they were picked off by the military and never seen again. 379108_v1a In the comic, the character watches in horror as everyone he knows is executed by the aliens. Eventually, Oesterheld was caught and killed during the dictatorship, but his comic still lives on. 379110_v14 379112_v1 The Guardian referred to Naji Al-Ali as the “nearest thing there is to an Arab public opinion,” and the “voice of dispossessed Palestinians before he was assassinated.” In 1987, one of the most “renowned political cartoonists” was shot dead in London with the case never solved. Naji Al Ali Naji Al-Ali made no apologies for his brutal depictions of Arab nations, which made him hated by his government. In fact, he was so popular with the citizens that he needn’t sign his work. Despite the warning that Yasser Arafat publicly gave that he’d “melt [Al-Ali's] fingers in acid,” Al-Ali continued to make his statements through cartoons, including one in 1987 poking fun at the Palestinian Liberation Organization. Shortly after its publication he was shot in the face and killed. AlAli AlAli1 alAli3 There are others to name that suffered similar fates. You have a chap by the name of Joe Hill executed in the early 1900s for his satirical cartoons and anti-government songs. In 1993 a group of Turkish artists suffered for honoring a dead poet who was hanged in the region for his work 4 centuries earlier. Radical Islamists took offence and burned 35 of them alive, along with renowned cartoonist Asaf Kocak. Palestinian cartoonist Joseph Nasr was kidnapped and disposed of, along with Guerrovi Brahim for doing a similar thing in Algeria (offending the government with cartoon drawings, that is), and more currently in 2012, Akram Rasian of Syria was arrested for offending President Al-Assad. Overall, to be a cartoonist seems to have an unnaturally high mortality rate, especially when depicting issues close to the heart – freedom of speech.
The article was written a couple years before Justin Trudeau became Prime Minister. The Author focuses on Justin’s liberal attitudes, especially regarding a hot topic such as the legalization of marijuana. He comes across as a “hero for the people” type of politician. The author of the article skims over a variety of topics concerning what Justin spoke of in Calgary. It is a very short story, but I think that the writer got his point across on the subject of Trudeau’s progressive views, mainly when it comes to marijuana.
Since 2014 these groups have been on the rise with a 40% increase of 142,500 reported crimes since the first six months of 2016 (Kern, 2016). Of greater concern are the obvious increases in terror attacks in the EU, specifically in France, Germany and Belgium, host nations for a majority of the migrant populations. In 2015, Paris experienced the Charlie Hebdo attack and ended with the Paris nightclub attack in which more than 150 were killed and 300 injured. In 2016, there have been a significant increase in terror attacks in Europe. The Brussels Airport bombing, the Nice truck attack as well as knife attacks in Germany. Added to this is the threats of future attacks in statements by ISIS leader Abu Bakar al-Baghdadi, as coalition forces fight to retake key strongholds from the Islamic State, but failed to secure the surrounding areas controlled by ISIS allowing an untold number of IS fighters to escape and enter into the EU with the flow of
Satire is a great tool used by many writers and actors since ancient times. The earliest example that we know about is a script from 2nd millennium BC in Ancient Egypt (Definition: Satire) and since then has evolved into a great part of our society. Satire is used to point out the faults of human vice in order for change and reform in either of two ways. There is a very bitter Juvenalian or a mild and light Horatian. In order to fully understand these forms of satire, method, purpose, and applications will be addressed.
Cormoran Blue Strike was born on November 23, 1975. His father is famous rockstar Jonny Rokeby and his mother, Leda Strike, a groupie. His relationship with his father is very weak, most likely owing to the fact that he has only ever spoken to him a few times. Strike had a difficult childhood as a result of his family moving often. Consequently, he knows many diverse parts of London, which definitely helps with his employment. It is implied he has a strong connection to Cornwall, where his reliable aunt and uncle live. He is only close with one of his half-siblings, Lucy Strike. Nevertheless, their relationship is insinuated to be troubled at times, yet they get along as best they can
As Charles Dixon walked in his office he was thinking about what other fun things he should do to punish the students at good ole Merced High. As you could see Mr. Dixon is the commander, leader, or just as we call it today, a principal. After the war that happen between the students and the staff there as been a lot more strictness to the school rules. I was walking with my disc man to my class and all electronics must be off when the bells ring infuriately there happen to be a sniper on the west wing of the campus and has soon as the clock struck 8:20, they shot me! Right on my ear. I only didn’t go to the hospital I got kicked out for being tardy and I lost 30% percent of my hearing on my left ear!
The September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States were felt worldwide. All countries feared seeing the tall Twin Towers and strong Pentagon being attacked by Islamist extremist members of Al-Qaeda. Although multiple countries prepared themselves to prevent an attack of such magnitude, Spain was not spared. In the morning of March 11, 2004 during rush hour, a series of 10 explosions in four locations occurred almost simultaneously in the mass transit rail system. This attack was performed by the Europe Al-Qaeda entity due to Spain’s involvement in the Iraq war, per a video release of an Al-Qaeda spokesman. Olivier Roy, discusses the relationship between French laicite, and Islam, and how laicite is essentially an obsession with religion. This obsession leads to the desire to legislate about religion instead of accepting true separation. In terms of Islam, laicite singles out Islam as a religion which is not compatible with French ideals. As mentioned before, secularism has become an ideological tool in the rise of anti-Muslim discourse. Islam is viewed as a threat to French national unity, and identity, as it encompasses practices which are deemed “wrong” by French principles. It assumes the expression of religious and cultural practices are forms of extremism. France has been a witness to atrocious terrorist attacks, and the fear of the population is used by political discourse to shape public opinions and values that marginalize minorities. These opinions and values stereotype Muslim minorities and creates a view of them as outcasts. It assumes that those who are not willing to adopt French values, are not French, and that if they are not with them, they are against
Ok so I want everyone in this room to close there eyes and put your heads down (silence for about 10 seconds then slams book on table). I swear I wasn't doing that to be mean or to wake anyone up. There's a point to that. Now, imagine me slamming that book on the table being Mr. Sheets running in here to yell at you to hide under your desk or get out of sight, or a bomb, or a gun shot. . Not even a code red or orange warning. One second you are in class and then the next you are hiding. Then men with masks come in and tell you to go to the gym and hold a gun to your back. For three days you are trapped in the gym with the whole school. Here, considering our size, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. But imagine if,
Since the event of 9/11, Muslims in the USA have been detained; at least 700,000 Muslims have been interviewed by law enforcement. Recently, a 14-year-old Muslim school boy called Ahmed Mohamed was arrested after taking a homemade clock to school, but the teacher assumed it was an explosive device. He created a science project of a clock, which was created inside a pencil case including other materials from around the house and then the teacher thought of it as a hoax bomb, after a few days the teacher realised the intentions of the boy and his project. This news creates a positive reaction from the public, as it is showing how you shouldn’t assume things. Together, we must demonstrate that Islam is a religion of peace and harmony, we must exhibit the fact that everyone who is a Muslim is not a terrorist, and we must expose the media who claim deceitful news about terrorism and blaming it on Muslims. People think Muslims are foolish: however, mathematics, coffee, vaccination came from Muslim
“Satire is a sort of glass, wherein beholders do generally discover everybody’s face but their own” (Swift). Such beholders, as Jonathan Swift astutely emphasizes, are intended, through guidance of satiric narrative, to recognize social or political plights. In some satires, as in Swift’s own A Modest Proposal, the use of absurd, blatant exaggeration is intended to capture an indolent audience’s attention regarding the social state of the poor. Yet even in such a direct satire, there exists another layer of meaning. In regards to A Modest Proposal, the interchange between the voice of the proposer and Swift’s voice introduces another medium of criticism, as well as the opportunity for readers to reflect on how well they may fit the proposer’s persona. In such as case, the satire exists on multiple levels of meaning—not only offering conclusions about moral problems, but also allowing the audience to an interpretation of their place among the criticism.
The article for this week chapter 5 “Building Identity: Socialization” is titled “Women’s Emergence as Terrorists in France Points to Shift in ISIS Gender Roles”. Throughout Paris there has been several attacks on significant monuments, causing people around the world to go in a panic attack (Breeden and Rubin 2016). Behind the recent most deadly attacks, were at the face of women. For
In the previous years, terrorist attacks in Baghdad have been frequent. The attack that took over 200 lives was devastating attack to the people of that city; the people are currently in fear after this tragic event. This event was a very tragic event; this attack took place in the city capital on days before the end of Ramadan. ISIL, the state sponsored group responsible for the attack have safe havens located in Iraq, and Syria. This event outlines the tragedy that such state sponsored terrorism groups are able to perform; this event takes place just as the military operations calmed the streets of Fallujah. This form of state sponsored event that occurred in this magnitude, it proves the country needs a better countermeasure policy towards
Satire is defined as “the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues” (Oxford). The best satirical writers can make the readers believe that an idea is “logical and practical.” This is seen in great abundance in Aldous Huxley’s novel, Brave New World. Through his writing, Huxley uses satire to effectively point out the flaws of society at the time. Even though Brave New World was written in 1931, the satirical points Huxley makes are still relevant in today’s world.
The word terrorism was first used during the French Revolution from the reign of terror inflicted by the French from 1784-1804 ("International Affairs"). It was used to describe the violent acts perpetrated on the French that inflicted terror on the various peoples and instilled fear within them. However, at the time it had a more positive connotation than the term that instills fear today. During the French Revolution this was because it referred to state-sponsored terrorism in order to show the need of state instead of anarchy, sometimes promoted by other groups (Hoffman 2). Therefore, even though terrorism has taken a new nature, terrorism can refer to official governments or guerrilla groups operating outside national governments ("International Affairs"). In order to encompass terrorism’s various sectors and explain it to the public, in both positive and negative aspects, many analysts have tried to put it into a few words. Terrorism is a method used by tightly of loosely organized groups operation within states or international territories that are systematic in using deliberate acts of violence or threats in order to instill...
