Woman Hollering Creek
Cultural backgrounds are strong influences to way individuals make their
decisions. In “Woman Hollering Creek” by Sandra Cisneros, Cleofilas Enriqueta
DeLeon Hernandez marries, Juan Pedro Martinez Sanchez, to quick to take account
of the challenges she will be facing: abuse, alcoholism, and unfaithfulness. Cisneros’
individuality, coming from a broken home and cultural difference life, adds her
experiences to depict what she faced through Cleofilas. She idolizes “telenovelas”
that she watches with her neighbors grasping the false knowledge of what love
between a man and woman is. Cisneros has a use of parallelism between the
author’s reality and fiction. The solid use of irony in the story reveals the actual
dangers Cleofilas faces in her day-to-day life. In addition, rather than Cisneros
adding specific detail of how Cleofilas feels, she displayed symbolism throughout the
story to illustrate the genuine emotion of hurt in her. Although Cisneros’ character,
Cleofilas, has a static mentality of life, she forms an unrealistic idea of love really is,
she illustrates her encouragement to the reader in order to state her beliefs that life
and love are better with a dynamic knowledge of it.
An individual’s cultural will always follow them throughout their life. Sandra
Cisneros added her roots and background experiences into “Woman Hollering
Creek.” A story that has actual personal histories from other individuals, it can be
more relatable to the readers. Cisneros faced poverty in her childhood, and knew
the cultural difference from Mexico and America was great. “[She] decided to write
about upbringing, including divided cultural loyalties, feelings of alienation, and

who cross the boarder to live the American dream. Cleofilas was a prime example of
how woman face the same amount of difficulties as they would in Mexico. She had
not only a flat mentality of what love was with a man, and life would be across the
boarder, awakened when all the difficulties she encountered were changed through
an independent woman. The presentation of Cleofilas was simple to assure she
would never release her roots of a Mexican woman. However, the American roots of

Cisneros holds dear to her heart, but also were expressed thoroughly by Felice in
the story. Although, not all fresh-off-the-boat women may not have a bright picture
of what life is; they can be influenced by the strong words and experiences from
others.
Everyone will have their own hobbies and jobs, but does it really define who that person is? This use if irony is to show how little of importance these parts of one’s life can be, and is why Story A gets left to be extremely short, followed by Story B which goes into greater detail and becomes the first example of an intruding
Like salt and pepper to beef, irony adds “flavor” to some of the greatest works of literature. No matter if readers look at old pieces of work like Romeo and Juliet or more modern novels like To Kill a Mockingbird, irony’s presence serve as the soul fuel that pushes stories forward. By definition, irony occurs when writers of books, plays, or movies destine for one event or choice to occur when the audiences expects the opposite; like Tom Robinson being found guilty after all evidences point other ways in To Kill a Mockingbird. These unique plot twists add mystery and enjoyability to hundreds of books. From the very beginning of The Chosen, a novel written by Chaim Potok, to the very end, irony’s presences does not leave the reader at any
“The supreme irony of life is that hardly anyone gets out of it alive.” -Robert A. Heinlein. In the short story, “The Possibility of Evil”, the author Shirley Jackson uses irony to develop the traits of the protagonist, Miss Strangeworth, in her small hometown. Throughout the story, there are many examples of irony as Miss Strangeworth goes through her normal day. Irony is an engaging literary device used by authors to expose underlying intentions which become critical to the development of the plot.
In the story “Love in L.A” written by Dagoberto Gilb, the main character Jake is living his life as a lie. Jake is daydreaming about a better car and life when he causes an accident on the L.A. freeway. Instead of Jake driving away, he decides to face the issue and realizes the person he hit is a beautiful young woman. From there Jake begins to tell lies to impress the women but, the truth was, Jake didn’t have a steady occupation or insurance and his fear of the unknown kept him untruthful. In the fiction story “Love in L.A.”, irony is used because, although Jake dreamed about a better life he wasn’t willing to do anything to change his current life, as well as make better decisions.
In this short story Sandra uncover the tension between Mexican heritage and demands of the American culture. Cleofilas life consisted of never ending chorus, no good brothers, and a complaining father. She is so excited when the day come for her to become married so she can move away from her town where she grew up, were there isn’t much to do except accompany the aunts and godmothers to the house of one or the other to play cards. She was excited to be far away, all she could think about was to have a lovely house and to wear outfits like the women on the tele. Her picture of the ideal Mexican wife soon became a nightmare when she finally arrived to Texas, where she
Another interesting factor about this story is the irony and tone in this story and how it adds toward each character.
In the literary, Woman Hollering Creek by Sandra Cisneros we are able to analyze the short story through a feminist perspective, due to the feminist critical critical theory. A literary criticism has at least three primary purposes in developing critical thinking skills, enabling us to understand, analyze, and judgement works of literature, of any type of literature. It resolves any questions or problem within a literary work that we do not understand from merely reading the literature. Look into multiple alternative outcomes to the literature and decide which the better outcome in the end is. Form our own judgements, our thoughts about what we feel from the literature. By analyzing in depth Sandra Cisneros as an author, we can see her as
Irony causes an interesting effect towards the reader causing them to expect the unexpected while conveying entertaining content. Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe is fully written with suspenseful and intriguing irony. The narrator could not have stated a better way to express his insanity than murdering the poor old man after self pro-claiming that he is sane. Edgar Allan Poe's technique to portray constant irony is substantially more effective than in any other short story because Poe created a “mad” man in Tell Tale Heart who considers himself “sane”, making the narrator himself ironic. Edgar Allan Poe presents verbal irony in an obvious way. During the story, the narrator attempts to prove to the readers that he is sane. Unfortunately,
Women in Mexico and the United States of America have played an important role structuring their society and elevating their status. Between 1846 and 1930, the stereotype and position of women within these countries differed vastly from one another. While various traditional roles of women remained the same, the manner in which they were viewed differed. In many ways, women in Mexico held a higher position than those in the United States during this time.
Mexican Women began to work the jobs men did, such as jobs that required maintenance, miners, and defense plants. This era proved to be especially significant for Mexican American women, whose new wage-earning status created a sense of self-sufficiency and intensified issues of self-identity” (Quinones 245) These Mexican women were the “Susanas del SP” which was the Mexican version of “Rosie the Riveter.” After World War II, when women were forced to return their job to the men, their ideals of family and marriage change. They longer believe they needed a men to support them because they could be independent and support
Irony is a useful device for giving stories many unexpected twists and turns. In Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour," irony is used as an effective literary device. Situational irony is used to show the reader that what is expected to happen sometimes doesn't. Dramatic irony is used to clue the reader in on something that is happening that the characters in the story do not know about. Irony is used throughout Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" through the use of situational irony and the use of dramatic irony.

Irony can often be found in many literary works. “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin is masterfully written full of irony. The characters of the short story, Mrs. Mallard, Josephine, Richards, Mr. Brently Mallard, and the doctors all find their way into Chopin’s ironic twists. Chopin embodies various ironies in “The Story of an Hour” through representations of verbal irony, dramatic irony, and situational irony.
Irony is the most significant technique that the author uses in this story. It shows the contrast between Louise's expectation and her limited reality. It also gives the story more twists and turns. The reader knows Louise's desire. However, her sister and her friend do not know.
The title of the story represents irony when the true essence of the title is completely different from what the reader might think it to be.
