Without proper education, improper actions and thoughts are hard to overcome. For example, the narrator’s sister, Billie, promised herself that she “wasn’t going to be like that” (Allison 170). The narrator and Billie swore they would break away from the pattern of violence within their family; however, their natural instincts leaned toward violent actions. Sometimes growing up we experience situations that can change our perspective on life. Especially, when these situations happen unexpectedly; we are in disbelief. In Toni Cade Bambara short story “The Lesson” written in first person; it delves into the struggle of a girl, Sylvia, who realizes the economic and social injustice surrounding her. However, with the help of Miss Moore Sylvia comes to grip with this issue, and opts to overcome it. In “The Lesson” Miss Moore wanted to impart on Sylvia and the other children is the value of a dollar, the importance of education, and to fathom the social and economic injustice that bounded them.
Interacting with a variety of characters, all of whom possess various beliefs, Kambili discovers the true values she desires for herself and her immediate family. With one force in the novel supporting expressiveness and independence, while the other force restricting Kambili, forbidding the values that she craves, the young Nigerian girl interprets the polar opposites to draw conclusions. Eugene, Kambili’s father, agrees to allow Kambili and her brother to visit Aunt Ifeoma and their cousins. Kambili describes, “Laughter floated over my head. Words spurted from everyone, often not seeking [, nor] getting a response. We always spoke with a purpose back at home, especially at the table, but my cousins seemed to simply speak and speak” (Adichie 120). At this point in the novel, Kambili is unfamiliar with the standard family, due to her father depriving her of these experiences. Now, Kambili discovers the daily ritual of family dinners where everybody enjoys themselves and laughing, key concepts Kambili has yet to learn. Confusion falls upon Kambili from the laughter at dinner, but eventually she realizes that laughing must be a standard activity to partake in, and also wants to be included in the experience as later seen when she has a dream where her laughter sounds strange.

Adversity can encourage people in ways success and wealth cannot, as there is a benefit in the hardship. In Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot, as well as Macbeth, by Shakespeare, adversity has developed the characters. From my observation, I strongly agree that experiences, such as hardship and danger, shape a person.

In result, Bebe’s mother told her she was disappointed in her, then sent her to her room, leaving her alone with her own consciousness, and leaving her alone to think about what she had done. On her way to her room she stopped to watch her neighbor, who was beating his son for something that was seemingly less important than what Bebe had done herself. She recalls a time when all the kids, the neighbors, her siblings, and herself, had all gotten in trouble together and the neighbors had said he was going to beat them all (128). Even though the neighbors boys were beaten and spanked they continued to get into trouble and do the things that caused them punishment, knowing they would get into trouble for it. Yet, even before Bebe's mother told her she was disappointed in her, she felt guilt and remorse, due to the way her mother had raised her, instilling values in her that saying and doing certain things wasn’t acceptable. This is one of the main examples of how there is no specific set of values, and that each family gets to choose their own values and how they instil them in their family.
Kambili grows from a quiet, reliant young girl into a true self- reliant individual. It is important to stand up against abuse. Although it is a harsh punishment, Papas death is somewhat warranted considering the torment he makes Kambili, Jaja and Mama put up with. Purple Hibiscus shows the true difficulty that victims of abuse face. Kambili is silenced, and she is rarely allowed to make her own choices. She faces difficulty making acquaintances in the outside world for much of her life because she is so shy and unable to talk to people. Kambili is forced to seek satisfaction from Papa her entire life or she is beaten. Speaking to the authority on Papa would be the best thing to do in an abusive situation, but Mama handles it her own way, through murder. When Papa is out of their life, Mama, Jaja, and Kambili are truly free and able to live an enjoyable life. Abuse is an awful topic, and abusers should be dealt harsh consequences. Although there had been children growing up in the same conditions there was a handful that became people you wouldn’t have thought they were capable of becoming. The children all had been facing the same adversity, so why did only one third become better people than they started off as? The answer is simple, they had the drive and capability to overcome the adversity instead of submitting to it. Instead of being content with the life they were given, they sought out to create opportunities for themselves and it benefitted them immensely. The two quotes are said at two points in Johnson's life; the first, when she was a young child and afraid to speak, and the second, when she was an adult with more confidence she thought she was capable of. The adversity faced may seem trivial to others, but the effort taken to overcome the adversity is exceptional. It may seem that she gained resilience from other people, but she gained her confidence from within, although it cannot be seen. Johnson could have easily succumbed to her adversity, but because of her will to achieve her dream, she overcame her fears and has fulfilled her wishes.
