Characteristics Through Slavery In 12 Years a Slave, Solomon Northup told the story of his horrifying experience in slavery after he had been taken from the North where he had been free for all his life. Through all his hardships and struggles trying to survive in the South, he never let being in those situations ruin the way he was and how he acted. Solomon was a very multidimensional man and he was caring, understanding, loving, and he was understanding. While being his caring self he was also strong and determined to get back to his family and the people he loved. He was the man all of the other slaves came to for advice and to ask him what they should believe in and what to think about situations. He was smart because he had been educated when he was younger because his father was free and could have people teach Solomon. He was kind to the slaves because he could relate to how they felt and understood the way the were treated. He was the man they came to so he could explain something or teach them how to do something better. He was one of the very few slaves that were educated. …show more content…

He was beaten multiple times and he still worked the next day because he knew if he would not have been out working he would be killed and his pride would die. He had to fight through some other difficult obstacles throughout the years of being in the South. On the last plantation he was at there was a young woman named Patzy, and she asked Solomon to take her to the river so he could drown her. But he knew that was wrong so he told her no and that she would find a way out. Patzy was at another plantation because she was getting soap, but her master told her not to go there anymore. So when she returned Solomon was instructed to strike Patzy until his master told him to quit. Solomon knew he had to or he would be beaten or even killed. He had to stay strong so he could make it back to his family, so he whipped
