For most of us, the family is considered as a well-known and comfortable institution. The perfect model of the ‘ideal’ family is still mostly considered to be consisted from two different sexes’ parents, and one or more children. Until quite recently, the sociology of the family was mostly functionalist and just in the last few decades has been challenged from various directions. According to Merriam-Webster (2011), the definition of a nuclear or traditional family means “a family group that consists only of father, mother, and children”. Each person may have their own view of what family means to them. My family would be considered a big family to many people today. Both of my parents have been married three times. My dad had four children before he married my mom and my mom had two children before she married my dad. My bothers and sisters are much older than I am. My parents divorced when I was two years old. My dad is not apart of my life, he is very disengaged. I do however, keep in contact with my siblings. Thinking about who plays what role in my family was really tough. I didn 't have a curfew, but my mom would tell me a certain time to be home depending on where I was going and who I was with. I think the main unspoken rule in our house that we are very open with one another. My mother and I do not typically keep secrets from each other. Most people would think this would be a good thing but sometimes it was not because my mom was more like a friend instead of a parent. It was hard to see eye to eye with her sometimes because she taught me to have my opinion and to be independent. She is my mother so she will always have the most power in our relationship.
