The Horrifying Truth The age of McCarthyism developed many of the characteristics that America is known to have. This era shows the part of American culture that has been ever present, that most Americans tend to overlook. McCarthyism is an idea and story that typifies America through its many culturally embedded ideas that still run through American society today. The lack of shared information and inaccurate information given by the government and media outlets that caused mass paranoia, doubtful convictions, and the inability and inflexibility to discuss new ideas in the McCarthy era parallel with today. These half-truths sometimes started with the FBI. “Because of the bureau’s strategic position within the government, it took control of the administration's anti-communist effort and managed to infuse its own right-wing concerns into what otherwise might have been a rather narrow program of internal security.” Both the Government and the mass coverage of what the government was saying led to more paranoia among people. This was efficient and effective of producing the desired effect of hating communism. McCarthyism especially demonstrates this through the visualization of the people’s resistance to new ideas and comfort with the status quo. “The [communist] party’s secrecy and lack of internal democracy, its attempt to create a broader movement, and above all, its connection to the Soviet Union gave plausibility to the notion that Communists endangered the United States.” While it may be possible that there was a security threat Americans have a tendency to point fingers at a minority group in every situation. Americans believed and continue to believe that they line in the land of the free, but like in the age of McCarthyism Americans are denied many rights and freedoms based on little to no evidence. “The violation of civil liberties that occurred during the McCarthy era could not have taken place without the collaboration of the nation’s political and social elites, the men and women who ran the federal government and the nation’s most important public and private institutions.” The stripping of minority rights, to a certain extent, portray the magnitude of action in which the American government and people will do to remain the the comfort of that status-quo and this is the way the American people are still viewed
