Is Beowulf an epic poem?
This should not even be a question because it is so obvious that Beowulf is an epic poem. All of the characteristics of an epic poem is in Beowulf. In an epic poem the hero should be from a noble birth and of great and historical importance, also the hero traits reflect qualities important to the society that he is from and performs courageous deeds, even superhuman that reflects the values of the era. All of this is in Beowulf epic poem and there is much more that prove that Beowulf is an epic poem.
One of the qualities of an epic poem is the hero has to come from a noble birth and of great and historical importance. Beowulf meet this quality perfectly because in the poem the author said “...Higlac’s follower…” (Line 109, Page 42) Higlac was the king of the Geats not only that but he is also Beowulf’s uncle, which makes Beowulf a hero of noble birth. Beowulf is from a noble birth because his uncle was the king of the Geats and of great and historical importance Because he is the strongest and greatest than anyone anywhere. His traits reflect qualities important to that society, he also performs courageous deeds even superhuman; that reflect that values of the era like when he was fighting Grendel and Grendel’s mom he was not fighting as normal human he was fighting as a superhuman. Actions of Beowulf often determined the fate of a group of people like when the Geats warriors knew that he was going to die when he was fighting the dragon so they ran away Also the setting vast and often included more than one nation,He traveled to the Denmark to help the Danes.
