What does it mean to be a good father and what characteristics do they have? Many share the same traits. In this expository paper I am going to share some examples of what a good father means to me. I have a firsthand example of what a good father is. I am also going to give examples of what a bad father is and compare the two. The definition of a good father is very universal. In every country and language. Oxford dictionary defines father as “A man in relation to his natural child or children.” Yet, I believe that the word father or dad carries a deeper meaning than just being the biological father of your offspring. I also believe that the role of a father doesn’t always have to be a man. In households where there is no dad present the …show more content…
These are the cowards that think running away from their problems is the only way to make their problems vanish. But, deciding to leave the family is one of the many ways someone can be a bad father. The way a father acts tells if he is a good or bad dad. While a good father may spend the time to read his child a book a bad father won’t even try to have a conversation with his child. I have seen families where the dad comes home from a long day at work and instead of sitting down and having dinner with the family he cracks open a beer and sits on the recliner and watches television. A good father no matter how busy they are they will find time for their child. A father is a very important part of a child’s life. A child needs a father figure and if they cannot find one at home then they will find one outside the home, and this is usually when the problems start. The child may join a gang or start doing illegal things with his friends to seek the approval of a male adult and get the love his father never game him. This is usually avoided by checking on your child and asking if everything is okay at school. The dad is usually the parent that introduces the kid to sports, teaches them about maintaining their cars, tells them right from wrong and has a lot of life lessons. I am not saying that the mother cannot be the man of the family, but most
The definition of a good father is as individual as the individuals involved themselves. A good father is able to support his children’s strengths, along with being able to help them overcome their weaknesses. He is able to do this without appearing to be a know-it-all. The ability to show by example how to live life, while not being afraid to make mistakes and not to be perfect all the time are also very important characteristic.
Although single parenthood is on the rise in homes today, children still often have a father role in their life. It does not matter who the part is filled by: a father, uncle, older brother, grandfather, etc...; in almost all cases, those relationships between the father (figure) and child have lasting impacts on the youth the rest of their lives. In “I Wanted to Share My Father’s World,” Jimmy Carter tells the audience no matter the situation with a father, hold onto every moment.
DAD is a story about a family, aging parents, controlling personalities, estranged son’s, and the power of love, as well as the dynamics of relationships. I found the movie to be a very accurate portrayal of not only getting old, but more importantly, about missed opportunities, taking people for granted, and the power of love along with dedication and loyalty.
Kathryn Kerns (June 2015) states through research that fathers who play with their children in light hearted ways strengthen the bond between them and their son/daughter, which in turn helps the child's development. With this said, is there some confidential secret to being a good Father? What is the difference between good and great? It does not take blood to be a great Dad. You do not need money to be a great Dad. It does not take the right timing to be a great dad. In The Kite Runner, Hosseini demonstrates the selflessness that characterizes a great father, as Ali, Baba, and Amir all make sacrifices to benefit the lives of their children.
Children look up to their fathers to help define who they will become in the future. Fathers interact with their children to increase the level of proper development. In the article it quotes, “Those early patterns of interaction are all children know, and it is those patterns that affect how they feel about themselves, and how they develop” (Source B). This shows that the manners and disciplinaries that fathers teach to their children will stick with them forever. Fathers encourage and teach their children the proper decisions and actions to make. In the article it says, “Fathers tend to observe and enforce rules systematically and sternly, teaching children the consequences of right and wrong” (Source D). This explains that Fathers mentor their children and
Webster’s dictionary defines parenting as the process of raising and education a child from birth until adulthood. Everyone has or had a caregiver, whether it be pests, animals or human beings. However, the thing that differs is the method of parenting. There are many methods of parenting, but there are only three main parts. They include authoritarian parenting style, permissive parenting style, and democratic parenting style. The next few paragraphs will give the reader a detailed description of these three parenting methods and what my parents have used in parenting me.
For me a father’s role to me is a little more important to a child, having a father teaches the girl that she deserves love and respect, protection, attention, strong self-esteem etc. so they know what to expect from their future relationships. The boy needs a father figure because it teaches him right from wrong, how to be a man, how to provide for his family, how to respect a woman etc. In this generation now, absent fathers is the most abused social problem. When a father is alive and he neglects to care or acknowledge you, is what is being abused. Mothers and fathers parent different, mothers are affectionate, emotional, and enforce safety of their children. Fathers are more of the disciplinarians, they enforce success, and a father figure is more
Research over the years has emphasized the role family has upon children within a family system. The role a mother plays for her children has been researched continuously for decades, often neglecting the impact of the father. With this lack of knowledge surrounding a father's paternal responsibilities and implications as a nurturer, it is important to examine the consequences of their actions on their children's future. Recently, research has begun to include the father's role, in particular to their daughter and features they look for in their romantic counterparts. If this research were to establish that young girls follow their father's prototype when choosing a romantic partner, parenting styles may change and fathers might become more involved. More importantly, fathers would know their role as not just the provider for material things but for emotional and psychological stability. Father daughter relationships are an important area to research because reports show that father involvement can be vital to children, improving their social skills and future adult relationships.
Since the beginning of time, fathers have had a profound effect on their child’s development. Over the years, the norm for traditional family dynamics of having a father figure in the household has changed drastically, and so did the roles of the parents. It is not as common as it used to be to have a father or father figure in the home. In this day and age, women are more likely to raise children on their own and gain independence without the male assistance due to various reasons. The most significant learning experience and development of a person’s life takes place in their earlier years when they were children. There are many advantages when there is a mother and father combined in a
A father is someone who protects, loves, supports and raises his children, whether they are biologically related or not. Every single person living on the Earth has a biological father. These biological fathers are supposed to take the responsibility of being a father because they did help bring a child into this world. One of the main responsibilities of a father is providing the child with the necessities of life, which include food, shelter, and clothes. Not only is a father responsible for the physical aspect but the emotional aspect as well. Children need to feel loved, cared for, and emotional support from their parents. A child needs to be reassured, so a father must show his affection, both physically and emotionally. A father needs to be involved in his children’s life. He needs to be a problem solver, playmate, provider, preparer, and he has to have principles. A father has to pr...
The role of a father in his child’s life extends past the knowledge of far too many, and can oftentimes be eclipsed by the role of the mother. Although the mother’s role is essential and greatly valued in a child’s life and development, the father plays a significant role as well. No mother can fill the father’s place in a child’s heart, for fathers nurture and play differently than a mother. Several studies show that an attendant and highly involved father is critical, especially in the early stages of a child’s life. The absence of a father during this stage can lead to “impaired social and behavioral abilities in adults” (Robert, 2013). But what is the role of the father? This paper discusses the role of the expectant father, the birth experience for him, the transition into fatherhood, and the rise of single fathers.
There are many different things that I take into consideration when it comes to parenting. Parents have many different responsibilities but there are three in particular that I think are very important. Being a good role model is important, as well as listening to your children and disciplining them appropriately. If you want to be a good parent you have to put your kids first.
In a mindset of a parent, he or she plans to educate their child to face the real world. Parents do the best they can to educate their children. Morals and responsibility are well established in the childhood of a person due to the discipline and role modeling of a parent. The disciplining of the children is mainly the responsibility of the parent. The role modeling of parents greatly establishes the morality of a child. An example of a role model of the parents are people who set examples that are imitated. Basically meaning monkey see, monkey do. If a child sees their parent doing good things, they will then do good things. The same principles go for discipline. Discipline is the practice of training people to obey rules or to punish someone due to disobedience. Children must be responsible for accepting the rules of the parents
Throughout history, the image of fatherhood has changed in a drastic way. In the past, the image of fatherhood has always been the father being the money maker going to his job every day to create a better living for his family. In the world today, the image of fatherhood is quite different. Father’s today do it all from being a stay at home dad taking care of the children to working as the CEO of a business. Some people may not see the importance of fatherhood in the world but in reality, it’s one of the strongest parts of a family. Approximately 63% of youth suicides in the U.S. are kids who live in a home without a father. (US Dept. of Health/Census) Based on statistics like this it shows how much of an impact having that father figure in your life is. Some points about fatherhood that will be discussed are what it was like in colonial times, what it’s like in present day, and the image of fatherhood is different for black fathers throughout the years. The views on fatherhood has certainly changed and not only in the household and work force but in everyday life.
By a definition found on the internet a father is a man who despite not giving birth to you still loves his child just as much as the mother does. Fathers are sometimes seem as more understanding and laid back and seem to have easier resolutions to their child’s problems. They typically tell the child everything will be okay and to tough it out and send the child on to continue what they were doing. However, sometimes he can be hotheaded and punish you faster than mom. Sometimes men are joked about as being big children, which can sometimes amount to a better relationship between the father and child. A lot of children go to dad for the fun stuff like money or going to a friends house because he will give into their begging and pleading easier than their mother
