There are many signposts used in the book Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelson. Signposts portray elements of fiction. One signpost, Again and Again, which is the repetition of words throughout a novel, portrays conflict, plot, symbolism, and characterization. The Again and Again signpost portrays conflict. For example, it showed Cole’s internal conflict of having trouble managing his anger. “Anger welled up inside Cole.” (Mikaelson 5). The word anger appeared frequently throughout the book. “A lifetime of hurt, a lifetime of proving himself, a lifetime of anger controlled his muscles now.” (Mikaelson 64).
