Character Analysis: The Marble Champ

Have you ever stepped out of your comfort zone and attempted something you are not good at? Did you quit or give up because you weren’t good at it right away? Well, Lupe Medrano in The Marble Champ by Gary Soto, is smart and talented but not in an athletic way in fact she is no good at sports at all and but, wants to be good at something. However she is very, very positive about the situation by coming up with a sport she can play, practicing a lot, and being a very good sport.

The first reason why Lupe is positive is because she came up with a sport she could play. In the story Lupe says “I’ll never be good at sports.” But, she still wants to be good at some kind of sport by saying “I wish I could win something, anything,” which shows that she is still positive about finding something. She also, sparks the idea to play marbles and gets excited because marbles is a sport she could become good at. To add on, she thinks positively in the story by telling herself “Yes,... I could play marbles, and marbles is a sport.” It has to be hard to find a sport you could play even though you have tried multiple sports but none have worked for …show more content…

She needed to put time in and accept help. In the story the author wrote that Lupe “practiced three hours straight,”. Also, she strengthened her thumb and wrists a lot by squeezing a rubber eraser one hundred times to strengthen her thumb and doing twenty push-ups for her wrists. In addition to this, she practiced by playing against the neighbor boy Alfonso and taking suggestions from her brother: “Think eye and thumb’-and let it rip!” If I personally was in Lupe’s situation I probably wouldn’t practice as much as she did. It probably wasn’t easy for her to practice so much and still be happy and willing to play marbles. This proves that Lupe is definitely one positive person after this much commitment into practicing
