Atticus Finch was a good man and a better parent. He knew how kids work and what to do to be the best he could. He would always do what’s best for his family. Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. He is a lawyer and most courageous person in the town of Maycomb. This is why i think Atticus is a good parent. While respecting his family he respects his maid Calpurnia. He once said “Anything fit to say at the table is fit to say to Calpurnia, she knows what she means to this family.” (Lee 157) He doesn’t want the kids not saying things, that they are allowed to say, to Calpurnia because she’s basically family to them. He also doesn’t want them saying things that they wouldn’t say to Calpurnia. He doesn’t want the kids thinking that just because Calpurnia is black and a maid they can't or shouldn't say certain things to her …show more content…
He had thought Jem had murdered someone and the police was trying to explain that he didn't do it, but Atticus thought Jem was being let off the hook so he said “I don't want him growing up with a whisper about him, i don't want anybody saying Jem Finch, his daddy paid a mint to get him out of that.” (Lee 273) Atticus cares and loves his kids so much that he doesn't want them growing up with a grudge against them or something people always say about him. He doesn't want them getting
Atticus has countless positive and negative characteristics, but there are two that stand out the most. The first character trait is that he acts a lot older than his age. Jem said that Atticus loved playing keep away and that he was never too tired, but when Jem went to tackle him, Atticus blurred out, “‘I am too old for that, son’” (Lee 118). Jem had never gotten that reaction from Atticus before. Atticus had to wear glasses, because without them he would not be able to see black on white with his left eye. Jem and Scout never see Atticus doing anything, he does not hunt, he does not go on walk, or he does not even travel. The only thing Jem and Scout see Atticus do is sit in the living room and read. Atticus is always on good terms with
For example, when he says “‘Well, you’ve heard it all, so you might as well hear the rest. Tell you what, you can come back once you’ve finished supper.’” (Lee 227) This shows that Atticus knows that they want to hear the court trial, so he decides to let Jem and Scout come back. This also illustrates that Atticus is a good father, because he respects what his children want. “‘I’m just going over to tell Miss Rachel you’re here and ask her if you could spend the night with us- you’d like that, wouldn't you’” (Lee 188) Atticus knows that Jem and Scout like Dill, so he lets him stay with them. This also portrays that Atticus doesn’t want any harm to come to Dill, or for him to be scared, so he lets him stay with them; proving that he is a great father. To sum up, Atticus respects his children, and wants them to be happy.
In the story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, we are introduced to the character Atticus. He is a hard working single parent of two who is kindhearted and does what he believes is right and treats everyone equally. Being such a hard worker, his mind is often on work, even at home, which means less time spent with his children. While Atticus may make some mistakes as a parent, overall he is an admirable father.
The author George Elliot once said “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Appearance can be very misleading, and you shouldn't prejudge the worth or value of something by its outward appearance alone. This philosophical idea has been included in many works of literature, including the timeless classic To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee. The novel takes place in the town of Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s. Many citizens of Maycomb tend to make judgements based on outward appearances alone. In the novel, Lee uses minor characters such as Boo Radley, Mrs. Dubose, and Tom Robinson to convey the book’s theme of prejudice.
Atticus Finch is a lawyer in the town of Maycomb In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, he is a father of two children, Jem and Scout Finch. He is a man of wise character and considerate soul. He knows his morals and tries to help his children grow up to be successful and happy. Throughout the novel, Atticus acts justly, loves tenderly, and walks humbly by the way he perceives the people in his life, how he succeeds in his job and treats his family.
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch’s parenting skills were often questioned throughout the novel. Although there were people that didn’t believe he was a good father, I think that he was. There are many different reasons provided throughout the novel that prove he is a good father. Atticus may let his children get away with a little more than the average parent would, but he has a good head on his shoulders. He is open to giving his kids more freedoms and there’s nothing wrong with that. Atticus approaches life with a devotion to fairness and exposes his children, Jem and Scout, to real life. Overall, he makes a pretty good father.
Atticus Finch is shown as a loving and devoted father in many ways. One way is, that he always has the answers to the questions his kids ask no matter what they are. For example, Atticus says, “‘Jack! When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness’ sake’” (Lee 99) when he is talking to Uncle Jack. This
Some may question the parenting style of others and that is just how humans work. They doubt the way others do things because it is not how they themselves would do it. Atticus Finch is a good father because he taught his children bravery through his self-control, he is determined to teach Jem and Scout the value of respecting people, no matter who they are, and he teaches his children that life involves making difficult decisions sometimes. Atticus is one of those people that everybody should look up to and want to be more like him because despite all the racism that happened and disrespect he got, he stood with his head held high and made sure his children did too.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee suggests that Atticus is a model parent. Atticus gives guidance to Jem and Scout, and he treats them with fairness and honesty. He tries to bring them up as best he can as a single parent.
Atticus Finch, father of Jem and Scout Finch, plays the loving, kind and knowledgeable father. He is an example of how parents can have a positive influence on their children. Atticus
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee the character Atticus Finch really stood out to me as a very bold man. He always kept us on our toes during the book when the trial was happening. Atticus not only taught me many lessons, but he also was one of the very few characters who never had to rethink his position on an issue.
Superman was a hero, person, and a compassionate man. Most people recognized him for his powers but I recognize him for the way he uses them. He doesn’t use them for evil. He is willing to risk his life to help anyone in the ominous face of danger. This can relate to Atticus Finch in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird because he is compassionate, courageous, and Tranquil.
The first of Atticus’s characteristics is that he is able to “walk in other people’s skin.” In the beginning of the book, Atticus Finch clearly demonstrates how he is able to “walk in other people’s skin” no matter what their background is when he reacts to the Boo Radley Game. The Boo Radley Game is a game that Atticus’s children, Scout and Jem, play with their friend, Dill. Boo Radley is the Finch’s neighbor. When he was in his teens, Boo and some other boys had gotten into trouble with the law. His father, Mr. Radley, promised that he would keep Boo in line to prevent him from going to the industrial school with the other boys. Boo wasn’t seen again until about fifteen years later when he was cutting newspaper for his scrapbook and stabbed
Atticus’ remark on the incident with Scout, Jem, Arthur Radley and Bob Ewell in chapter 30, “[T]hank you from the bottom of my heart, but I don’t want my boy starting out with something like this over his head. Best way to clear the air is to have it all out in the open” (366), then he says, “[I]f this thing’s hushed up it’ll be a simple denial to Jem of the way I’ve tried to raise him […] I don’t want to lose him and Scout, because they’re all I’ve got” (366), is a perfect example of Atticus’ honesty to both Scout and Jem, and others. This honesty shows Atticus parents as an example to his children. With this example, Atticus sets them apart from other kids by identity. Atticus shows Scout and Jem the reality of the world with his honesty; showing them the real world and teaching them life is not fair, which creates a sense of truthful identity. This can be seen in “[I]t ain’t right, Atticus” (284), when Jem analyses and copes with the trial of Tom Robinson. Jem knows the law is not fair to Tom, but because of Atticus’ honesty, it helped Jem understand that the world is not fair, and this honesty explains to both Scout and Jem that the justice system is meant to be fair, but sometimes it is not fair. Atticus’ honesty ultimately prepares Scout and Jem for the reality of the
Atticus Finch, the father of Jem and Scout Finch, tries to instill morals that he believes are right no matter the circumstance. Even with the troubling situation in his life, he is able to handle it well and explain it in an orderly manner to his children. After Mrs. Dubose angers Jem and Scout by calling Atticus
