On page 169, the text states, “‘Mr. Granger nodded. “Wouldn't have lost this section if it hadn’t been stolen by your Yankee carpetbaggers after the war. But y’all keep on playing Santa Claus and I’m gonna get it back-- real easy.” This direct quote shows that Mr. Granger has a plan. The fact that Jimmy Cross "would imagine romantic camping trips into the White Mountains in New Hampshire" after he marched the entire day and dug a foxhole indicates that he thinks often of Martha (434). In roughly every retelling, the objective of secrecy in all aspects of the operation is emphasized. Gara writes “Some individuals, however, plotted and executed their own escapes without consulting anyone, and...learned from bitter experience that it was best to keep such plans to themselves” (Gara 45). This illustrates how slaves told very little, if anything, to others for they feared problems were sure to arise if more and more fugitives were involved. One story in Gara’s book is about a man by the name of Henry Brown, who is hailed for his most creative and daring escape from slavery in 1849. While working in a tobacco factory in Richmond, Virginia, Brown observed large boxes being shipped out, he then cooked up a risky plan with befriended carpenter Samuel Smith who built a similar crate just for him. He had just enough room to fit and after a short time he was on a train headed to the Anti-Slavery Society in Philadelphia. After a 26 hour trip, out walked a free man who coined the name Henry “Box” Brown. His story soon became an international sensation, newspapers around the world printed every detail of his elaborate escape. He then began to lecture about his planning and with no surprise shipments headed to the north were inspected by a much closer eye. His associate Samuel

Alistair Deacon from As Time Goes By once said that, “The people in the book need to be people.” The main character in a story or in a play always has to be somewhat likeable or relatable. Who doesn’t like to feel like they can relate to their favorite character in a story? In many cases the authors of stories or books always try to make the reader feel like they are not the only ones with problems or going through a crazy situation. Wanting the reader to become engaged in the characters' conflicts is what they aim for. In Arthur Miller’s play, Death of a Salesman, many people were gripped by Willy Loman’s, the main character, problems because they too struggle with many of the conflicts that Willy faces. Willy could not keep his life together, failing to see reality and pursuing the wrong dream, with a wrong viewpoint, ended up causing others around him and himself to hurt.
