When Ernesto got to Sacramento, he was amazed because of the lightbulb, toilet, and mattress especially since he slept on a matt and these had springs in them. "In the Mexican style, people would know that you were enjoying their jokes tremendously if you merely smiled and shook a little, as if you were trying to swallow your mirth. In the American style there was little difference between a laugh and a roar, and until you got used to them you could hardly tell whether the boisterous Americans were roaring mad or roaring happy."(Barrio Boy 228) This is in Mexican style of listening and American style of listening was different. ...he principal moral of this culture, because they choose to achieve success and they are interested only in the result. Second, the real understanding of “cultural assimilation” is What Rodriguez true believes about the effort and the sacrifice that the minority try to do and lead to be blended or be assimilated into the surrounding culture. There is no doubt that when you adopt a culture as part of our own we become a part of it. Add to the previous line, people need to start understanding that being assimilated should have the dignity and forget about inequality and differences between people, which include skin color, religion, race, and nationality. For this reason, , we have to be aware in teaching our children the value of our culture and the equality between people. In addition, now more than before, I am fearless to say where I am from or what my religion is.
It is true that the more people from different cultures that are in a given area, the more the cultures are diversified. However, with all realities, some claim that immigrants dilute the American culture. Indeed, they cause some changes to the culture. Nevertheless, these changes can bring a wealth of attraction and a source of beauty for the country that everyone should be proud of. It is obvious that every single immigrant in the US has his own culture and way of life. When all these are added together, they form a very rich culture. In addition, they bring various interesting aspects such as food, music, literature, etc. That makes the Americans rich in cultural knowledge. The importance of cultural diversity is that it teaches the people to understand each other’s views, interests, and ideas and helps people view the world in different ways. This would finally lead the society to work towards each other’s interest, mutual goals, and objectives. Tamar Jacoby in his article “Are Today’s Immigrants Assimilating in U.S Society, Yes,” he said that, “Those who are coming now are people who understand cultural fluidity, understand intermarriage and find that a natural, easy thing. This maintains unity and balances in the society” (411). Once this stage is reached, all the problems would be solved. Then it can be said that America has reached a true democracy, echoed by
“Cultural identity is a broader term: people from multiple ethnic backgrounds may identify as belonging to the same culture” (Elise Trumbull and Maria Pacheco). Though people may identify themselves with a certain culture, their beliefs and actions varies and adjust to their experiences. “…We do not consciously pick and choose attributes from the total set; rather, the conditions and events in our individual lives…” (Elise Trumbull and Maria Pacheco). A person is easily influenced by their culture which also makes an impact on their beliefs as well as their view of the world which can cause conflict with another person.
Culture and identity are two very strange ideas. They are received at a very young age, yet they are very hard to give to someone else. They will affect you for the rest or your life, yet for the most part you are born into them. However, they soon become very important to us and we cannot, no matter what we do, live without them. They are a part of us, and a vital aspect of society. However, it took me a very long time to recognize that I had an identity and a little while after that before I knew what it was.
pp. 522-529. The debate today is whether immigrants and their families should blend into American culture, even if it means breaking with their past. Once cultures intermingle, they are forever changed. American culture was initially shaped by many European races and cultures coming together through shared ideals and values which have been attributed to our diversity.
What is culture? Many people ask themselves this question every day. The more you think about it the more confusing it is. Sometimes you start leaning to a culture and then people tell you you’re wrong or they make you feel like a different person because of your culture. I go through this almost every day. Because of the way I was raised I love Mexican rodeo but I was born and raised in Joliet. This can be very difficult trying to understand culture. I live in this huge mix of culture. Culture is personal. People can have many cultures especially in America and because of globalization. Cultural identity is not one or the other, it is not Mexican or American. Cultural identity is an individual relevant thing.
Starting with one of the surface aspects of my cultural identity is my language. I speak English, like most people who were born in America I learned English and only English right from the start. I
In the story Barrio Boy, Ernesto changes to a new school in a new country. He knows he needs to learn English so he can understand people in America. So he and Miss Ryan (a teacher for foreign students) worked very hard to help feel welcome in the new country of America. He is on a mission to have a better life, and
Each immigrant has brought some of its homeland culture and incorporated it with the culture of the American people; others have created a barrier and never advanced outside those barriers.
...in time, allow them to integrate into American mainstream. The phrase “American mainstream” is forever changing in meaning. Since its foundation, America has been a nation of immigrants. At first, immigrants came to America to find freedom: freedom of religion, freedom to live by one’s own culture while being under the protection of the government, etc. Later, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, citizens tried to push immigrants to become “Americanized”. In this case, the American mainstream comprised of people who were forced to disregard their ethnic origin and adapt to American culture. Now, the meaning of the American mainstream has once again changed. It is now comprised of people who strive to keep their ethnic origin, while forming bonding and bridging relationships with others to increase the social capital of their home, the United States of America.
“Children begin to develop a sense of identity as individuals and as members of groups from their earliest interactions with others” (Trumbull and Pacheco 9). People start to develop their cultural identities as a young child, unknowingly, by their interactions with other people. Though, what is a person’s cultural identity? According to one source, cultural identity can be described as “one of the most basic type of identity is ethnic identity, which entails an awareness of one’s membership in a social group that has a common culture” (Trumbull and Pacheco 9). Considering this definition, I see now that my cultural identity can be best represented by my language because I can speak both English and Spanish and I use both languages on a daily
At some point in our lives we experience a culture as an outsider by moving from one culture to another. In the world today there are so many different cultures and not one of them is found to be the same.Instead they all have something that makes them unique, whether its language or even the clothes they wear and their behavior as well. The differences they have is what separates them from one another and who ever joins that particular culture must get accustomed to their way of life.In the society today we have many people immigrating to the United States to start a new and better life but what they soon begin to realize is that it’s a whole new world out there and in order to survive they have to get accustomed to the new way of life which is much different from their lives before.
New Boy is a short film that envelops the viewer into a third person character and leads viewers to experience how it feels to be an outsider “The New Boy”, the audience experiences this feeling through the Protagonist 's mind in this case “Joseph.” This short film not only focuses on the idea of bullying but also the idea of being an outsider. The positioning of the title “New Boy” on the left-hand side of the frame indicates that the new boy will be powerless.
How many times have people asked themselves, who am I? What defines me? Culture plays a very important role in the identity of people. People are born in a culture, their family's culture, but not with an already established culture. The term culture refers to the values, beliefs, customs, style of dress, food, songs and stories that are shared and learned in a characteristic group. On the other hand, identity is a set of features, attributes and characteristics that define a person. Identity is constructed by language, social structure, gender orientation and cultural patterns. Although many do not relate these two themes, there is a complex relationship between culture and identity.
