Immigrant should assimilate the new culture and keep their own culture and traditions. They should learn to balance two cultures. Barrio Boy was talking about Ernesto Galarza and his family from Jalcocotan to Sacramento. When he arrives in Sacramento, his facing lot of challenges and obstacle. American culture was different from Mexican culture. He learned how to balance two cultures when the cultures clash. He finally to keep his own culture and assimilate American culture such as learned English during the school. Also, he meets a different kind of people such as nice neighbors, classmates.

Specialize in large cities, when everyone from a different country and has their own culture. The person that has the exact same culture will create a group because they think they have the common value to each other. In the book, Ernesto and his family move to America, they find they have a different culture of American culture. Language difference, food differently and the life way were different. When Ernesto got to Sacramento, he was amazed because of the lightbulb, toilet, and mattress especially since he slept on a matt and these had springs in them. This was the new inventions he witnessed that were not back in his hometown of Jalcocotan. "In the Mexican style, people would know that you were enjoying their jokes tremendously if you merely smiled and shook a little, as if you were trying to swallow your mirth. In the American style there was little difference between a laugh and a roar, and until you got used to them you could hardly tell whether the boisterous Americans were roaring mad or roaring happy."(Barrio Boy 228) This is in Mexican style of listening and American style of listening was different.
