In chapter 74 Ismael is comparing two whales heads hanging on the pequod. He definitely expresses and describes what he sees in the whale and theorizes what he thinks the whale is doing. Ishmael states “while in most other animals that I can now think of, the eyes are so planted as imperceptibly to blend their visual power, so as to produce one picture and not two to the brain; the peculiar position of the whale’s eyes, effectually divided as they are by many cubic feet of solid head, which towers between them like a great mountain separating two lakes in valleys; this, of course, must wholly separate the impressions which each independent organ imparts. In chapter three Isbister explains that social scientists wrestled to justify conditions in the third world, as a result, a mixture of indefinite theories developed. Many of the imagery Ishmael portrayed in the book makes us feel like we are also a firsthand witness right then and there. It is with "the poor devil of a Sub-Sub" that Ishmael's voice first makes itself heard. The Sub-Sub who has "gone through the long Vaticans and street-stalls" (Extracts: 2) to find mundane but diverse images of whales is toasted as one who will soon expel the archangel triumvirate "Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael" in heaven but will be forgotten here on Earth. In the beginning of the chapter, Ishmael enjoys the clear steel-blue day. Clear steel-blue day is imagery and a metaphor, painting a picture in my mind of a very cerulean blue sky with no clouds. Melville describes the air as being pure, soft, and feminine whereas he describes the sea as robust, strong, and masculine. He is using personification by giving the air and sea, feminine and masculine features, respectively. For men who spend months upon years fantasizing about whale death, I was pleasantly touched by Ishmael's deep thought into a matter that wasn’t as prevalent in Melville's time at the height of whale hunting. Ishmael at one point states, “Comparing the humped herds of whales with the humped herds of buffalo, which, not forty years ago, overspread by tens of thousands...to show that the hunted whale cannot now escape speedy extinction” (pg.352). What a nice and thoughtful sentiment to make PETA proud. Not so fast because Ishmael then proceeds to reject the previous argument and proclaims the whale as “...immortal in his species, however perishable in his individuality” (pg.354). A curious rebuttal to a seemingly reflective and intelligent previous argument. I took this reasoning as Ishmael once again viewing the whale as his object of worship. Before boarding the ship, Ishmael sees a person on the dock beside the whaling boat. This person's name is Elijah, coincidentally sharing the same name as the prophet. Elijah hints to Ishmael to turn back from this voyage while he still has time. Elijah states that Ahab shall smell land where there be none, Ahab shall go to his grave but will rise within one hour and beckon, and all save one will be destroyed. Ishmael disregards him and continues. When Ishmael is ready to board the ship, Elijah warns him again. This is a sign that something terrible will happen once aboard the ship and everything and everyone will be traumatized. If only Ishmael would know, he will soon be trapped in Ahab's crazy world.
In Blessed Unrest, Paul Hawken illustrates to the reader how groups of organizations with similar principles and ideals are coming together to form what Hawken defines as a “movement.” In the chapter “Blessed Unrest,” Hawken explains the vast problems that plague the globe, such as loss of water for agriculture or theft of resources from third-world countries by government and corporations. He writes that due to these problems the world today is facing a task exponentially more difficult than the abolition of slavery, the restoration of the planet. However, Hawken also describes in the chapter those who are eager to address and protest against these dilemmas. Individuals who are willing to come together under common goals in order to necessitate environmental and social change in the world. Hawken, as his primary point, illustrates how groups of organizations and individuals are coming together to form a “movement,” which Hawken describes as a new form of community and story focused on three basic ambitions: environmental activism, social justice initiatives, and indigenous culture’s resistance to globalization.

No great and enduring volume can ever be written on the flea, though many there be who have tried it" states the narrating character Ishmael as he attempts to justify his reasoning on writing such a lengthy novel. Indeed, the whale may be the most complex and grandiose mammal on earth, yet one may still question the ulterior motive of Melville for explicating every detail of a whaling journey in Moby Dick. In fact, Melville develops many themes throughout the text that lead the reader to believe that his "mighty theme" is the meaning of life. Thus, the adventure of hunting the Great White Whale, Moby Dick, can be seen as a giant analogy to seeking the meaning of life. Through this journey, Ishmael describes the different members of the crew and their interpretation of the whale. Yet, Ishmael refrains from assigning one particular meaning to the whale and, in the end, is the only crewmember to survive the journey. Symbolically, Melville believes that an individual must be able to see many meanings in life in order to survive the trap of intolerance of different beliefs and lifestyles. To evidence this hypothesis, Melville presents a number of ironic contrasts in the text including religious hypocrisy, the false appearance of the sea, the relationship of Good and Evil, the coffin as a dual symbol of both life and death, the interpretations of the whiteness of the whale, and the life/death issue of the whaling industry. Through these contrasts, Melville strives to awaken the reader to the many meanings of life and to avoid limiting one’s mind to one, fixed meaning.
In October of 1851, Herman Melville published a book about a great white whale. This book was later created into a movie, and there are many different renditions. In every version Ishmael leaves the city and wants to experience the life on the sea. He meets his unlikely friend, a native harpooner, and he sets sail on a boat with a revenge seeking captain. While Captain Ahab is in search of the whale that ate his leg, the rest of the crew is growing tired of not making any profits. These events cause readers to look at Melville with an anti-transcendentalist view. In Moby Dick, Melville’s anti-transcendentalist views are present in Captain Ahab’s character, the sea, and Moby Dick’s revenge.
Moby Dick is “all that most maddens and tourments,” even though Moby Dick was defending its self from Ahab. Melville wrote “all the subtle demonism of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified, and made practically assailable,” explaining of how Ahab has made the whale a symbol of everything bad or negative. Ahab fails to be able to rationalize what has happened to him. He does not realize that the loss of his leg is just part of the dangers of whaling. Instead of understanding that it was just a bad turn of events, Ahab “ piles upon the whale’s white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race,” falsly making the whale a symbol of the pain and hate.
