Whirligig, Paul Fleischman's beautifully constructed novel that spun the complex story of Brent Bishop and his task to memorialize Lea, an unfortunate teen who crossed his path when he tried to kill himself in a car. To keep Lea's spirit alive, Brent was assigned to create four whirligigs that resembled Lea, and put them in the four corners of the United States.
Mistakes can seriously impact the people who make them; however, the effects are not always negative. In the book, Whirligig, by Paul Fleischman, a teenage boy named Brent is the new kid in town and he faces some major problems with his peers. After being pushed around, treated like a pawn, and utterly rejected, Brent tries to commit suicide by taking his hands off the wheel of his moving car. Although Brent’s attempt is not successful, his actions still have a tragic ending- Lea, a young, kind, beautiful girl, is unlucky enough to be in the car that Brent crashes into. The car accident results in Lea’s death, but also the start of Brent’s magical journey of redemption. Brent’s task is to travel to the four corners of the country, build and display whirligigs, and keep Lea’s spirit alive. Though Brent may not realize it, the trip does influence him in many different ways, one major change being Brent’s newfound ability to create strong relationships with a variety of people that he meets during the course of his adventure. Throughout Brent’s journey, Paul Fleischman uses the people that Brent interacts with to portray the idea that friendships can be formed regardless of personality type, race, and age.
After being humiliated at a party, 16-year-old Brent drives away intoxicated and makes the last minute decision to kill himself. Letting go of the wheel on a busy highway, he ends up killing someone else. The victim is another 16-year-old female named Lea. Her mother asks nothing else but for Brent to put up 4 whirligigs, one in each corner of the United States. Being that they were Lea’s favorite toys when she was younger, their purpose is to serve as monuments representing Lea’s ability to make people smile. With plywood, tools, a construction manual, and a bus pass, Brent sets out to build the whirligigs. In each of the 4 states, someone crosses the path of these monuments and learns a priceless lesson. After being inspired by the whirligig in Florida, a young Puerto Rican father learns an important lesson. It’s that people in a group can make good music or bad. A teenager and her dying grandmother make the best of their relationship after seeing the whirligig in San Diego, California. In Washington, an adopted boy realizes that his life is not so bad after all. And lastly, a young girl and her best friend are reunited in Maine. More important than the effect on others, however, are the lessons that Brent learns along the way. His life changing experience teaches him what is the central theme in the book, a theme that you would enjoy finding out for yourself.
“Making a Difference” by June Callwood is an expository essay created to inspire the reader to make a change in the world around them, and to stand up for what they believe in. By just doing simple, positive things, people can make a huge impact on their lives and the lives of people around them. June Callwood, author of “Making a Difference”, changes the way many people see the world by describing scientific research and telling the stories of people who performed small, random acts of kindness that made a huge difference in people’s attitudes and the community around them.
Could a person live in a world without people who love and care for them? Could people survive in a world where they were judged by how they were presented on the outside? S.E. Hinton, the author of The Outsiders, discusses many universal themes, such as friendship, stereotyping, and change. In The Outsiders, two rival groups, the socs and the greasers, are separated by social class. The friendship between the greasers will be tested when an unexpected event changes everything. The greasers must learn that people experience many tragic events, no matter who the person is. Based on the universal themes, the readers will begin to understand how the characters in the novel grow and change, and how friendship and family help along the way.
Don’t let apathy and indifference be the silence that kills dreams. Help me make a difference in the lives of the people you know and love, make a difference in your community and your world.
The changes that the directors made to “The Outsiders” movie were eye opening to fans of the novel, The Outsiders. One of the differences between the two is the fact that Dally’s character and death was not the same as described in the novel. Another difference between the two would be the character’s description and Bob’s roll on drowning Ponyboy. There are some similarities such as the outcome of the church’s fire and the fate of the characters. The film adaption of The Outsiders, share many key points and scenes however, because the film was condensed there are many gaping holes in the plotline.
From our first breath to our last, every person on Earth is in a perpetual state of change. Some of this change is physical, some of it is mental, and all of it is important. One of the most obvious instances of human change is seen throughout adolescence. During this time, both our bodies and our minds change very rapidly, nearly transforming us into completely different versions of ourselves. While it is true that this period of the human life does contains the largest amount of both physical and mental change, it should not be thought of as the only time in our life where change is acceptable. At any other time, though, change is usually looked at as negative. In many texts, when an adult changes, they are usually viewed as fickle or even
Whether it be mentoring, helping the homeless, giving blood, holding a charity event or helping support those in need. No matter what the type of work you do is, it matters as long as it helps the community become a better place. The act of kindness that you perform today can save a life tomorrow. Every person isn’t born with ethical thoughts, or thoughts at all but they learn them as they grow. For example, if you see your parents or someone that you admire do good things such as giving back, and help people who need it or just doing right by the religion that they follow, then there is a split chance, that you will follow in those same exact footsteps and fill them just as well as you were taught. Not saying you have to go out of your way to give money to help someone pay for groceries and do things for the less fortunate, but put yourself in their shoes. What would life be like from the other side? Could you still have everything you have now? Everybody can’t be financially stable all the time and you never know when the tables could turn and you can be in their place. It doesn 't take much time to make a difference in your community or any community rather. Give what you can and be that change you want to see in others. We have to learn to work together, rather than despising one another or not getting along with each other for no reason logical. “Two minds are greater than one”. If we stop working against each other and start

Inspire people to go in an alternative direction, in pursuit of a vision, and create change.
William’s story tells us of hardship, more than any of us will probably ever experience, triumph, and how the will of one person can change so much. He explains to us his culture, relating it to examples we know so well, and showing how the world is slowly coming together by cultural diffusion. Overall, I would recommend this book because it is very eye opening and inspiring to young minds like ours.

I believe one person can make a difference. I’ve seen it in my own life and I’ve seen throughout history that an individual who speaks out or acts on their beliefs can make a difference. I think of this often when I am confronted by challenges. Will I remain silent or will I have the courage to act?
There are many things we need to change in society to become sustainable for future generations. One thing is for certain, we all need to do our part to contribute to this effort, and there is no time like the present to change our ways.
