The Korean War was a significant event in the cold war, it is also known as the ‘forgotten war” because it has been overshadowed by a much larger communist war in Vietnam. The main cause of this war was the constant spread of communism, As communism swept through taking over countries including china, the United States became terrified of it spreading, they quickly made a plan to stop it, and it is known as the Truman doctrine which states that the U.s will help any country that is being threatened by communism. However in 1950 South Korea which was under U.s control was invaded by North Korea. Now it was time for the United States to take action. At the end of the Second World War, the north was taken over by the Soviet Union, and the south was taken over by the Americans. At the Potsdam conference the United States and USSR agreed on a line which dived the north and south known as the 38th parallel line. There had always been tight relationships between the North’s leader Kim sung and Syngman Rhee the ruler of South Korea. North Korea had a much larger and powerful army than South Korea which made most of South Koreas population communist. In order for the south to win, they would need the help of United States troops. United States president Truman and General Douglas MacArthur worked together to save South Korea but, there goal was to take over Korea and get rid of communism. In March 1950 Stalin gave Kim sung permission to invade south Korea and start the Korean war, he thinks that the united states has little interest in south Korea but he is proved wrong. The United States joins the war, July 27, 1950. Macarthur withdraws marines from the Pusan perimeter to invade the port of Inchon, this furious attack pushed the North... ... middle of paper ... ...hey agreed to make a demilitarized zone on the 38th parallel line or between north and South Korea. The United States promised to restore south Korea and help build up a larger military force. The United States and china try working together to solve the Korea issue, leaders from china, North Korea and the United States meet at Panmunjom, it is known as the peace village and is located on the 38th parallel, no decisions are made because of anger and accusations from both sides. A new conference is made, this time it is meant to be kept peaceful. The Geneva conference began between just the United States and china to unify Korea, however no agreement was made so Korea remains divided today. Truman’s goal of making Korea entirely communist free was never reached. The Korean War was significant in the cold war, because it led to an even larger communist war in Vietnam.
The Korean War changed the face of American Cold War diplomacy forever. In the midst of all the political conflict and speculation worldwide, the nation had to choose between two proposed solutions, each one hoping to ensure that communism didn?t sweep across the globe and destroy American ideals of capitalism and democracy. General Douglas MacArthur takes the pro-active stance and says that, assuming it has the capability, the U.S. should attack communism everywhere. President Harry Truman, on the other hand, believed that containing the Soviet communists from Western Europe was the best and most important course of action, and that eliminating communism in Asia was not a priority.
The United States vows to protect the democratic South Korea. American forces defend South Korea but are almost pushed on the peninsula . Douglas Mccarthur is in charge of the American forces. He stages an impressive counter attack that pushes the North Koreans all the way back to China. This is when China enters the warand pushes American forces back to the 38Th parallel. In 1953 , the war ended In a stalemate. (document C)
Most people know that the Korean War was started when, in 1950, the North Koreans (N.K) crossed over the 38th parallel and opened fire on the South Koreans (S.K). North Koreans wanted the land,,because of the resources on the land. What most people don't understand are the other hidden conflicts that contributed to the tension. The Cold War was going strong between the Soviet Union /China and the United States.
President Truman strategy was a “negotiated settlement” “This would end the war, unfortunately North Korea would remain independent.” His tactics were diplomatic, whenever there would be a dispute he would talk it out not causing any trouble or alarming other countries there is a collision of interests.
Panmunjom: Panmunjom, Korea was where the negotiation between the United Nations and North Korea occurred that ultimately ended the Korean War. The negotiation a Panmunjom positively affected the war effort as it set a defensible boundary that ensured that communism would not spread.
However, there were some very close calls regarding nuclear weapons and the spreading of communism. The Cold War lasted from about 1947 until 1991 and during that time there were two additional wars fought; the Korean War and Vietnam War. The Korean started on June 25, 1950 when 75,000 North Korean soldiers crossed the 38th parallel which separated North and South Korea (Korean War). By July, American troops joined the war and the main purpose for this was to stop the spread of communism. The Korean War finally came to an end in 1953 and about 5 million troops and civilians lost their lives (Korean War). Overall, the war didn’t achieve much besides that communism did not spread to South Korea and to this day, North Korea and South Korea are still divided. The Vietnam War was another war that was fought in the time period during the Cold War. This war started on November 1, 1955 and lasted until April 30, 1975 with a total of 5 million casualties including American troops, Vietnamese soldiers, and Vietnamese citizens. In 1973, President Nixon ordered for the removal of all troops in Vietnam but many people did not agree with this back in America (Vietnam War). The war finally came to an end in 1975 when communist country North Vietnam seized control of South Vietnam and the country became unified as the socialist Republic of Vietnam
Throughout the early 1950’s the Korean Peninsula was a location with much civil unrest and violence. For this reason, it is a miracle that the Korean Armistice Agreement was actually mutually agreed upon by North and South Korea. Even with the constant complications, and early opposition surrounding the Korean Armistice Agreement, the aid of Dwight D Eisenhower made this unrealistic attempt of peace a reality.
June 25, 1950 marked the day in which fighting between the North Koreans and South Koreans started. 135,000 North Korean troops crossed the border into South Korea while others attacked by sea. In several hours North Korea had successfully detained the South Korean city of Kaesong and in the next couple hours South Korea’s capital, Seoul, was under attack. Things were not looking good for Korea.
United States involvement during the Cold War began with the Korean War. The War started on June 25, 1950 when troops from North Korea entered the 38th parallel, which was the boundary established after World War II between North Korea and South Korea. The North was supported by the Soviet Union and People’s Republic of China, while the South was later supported by the U.S. and its allies. Their attack was one of the first military measures of the Cold War (“Korean War”). Once North Korea invaded South Korea, U.S. involvement took place to prevent further communist regime and their involvement aided in several military developments and also left lasting political and diplomatic affects during the Cold War.
The first military conflict, Russia Prime Minister Stalin and the United States President Truman join together in force, forcing Japan out of Korea. In this conflict, if Russia and the United States defeat Japan. The two superpowers will split the Country of Korea, the North will be govern by Communist Russia and China. The South Govern by The Free Nation, United States. After Russia and the U.S.A left out of North and South Korea. The north invaded the south model after the United States. North Korea model as communist Russia and china. Not until the North took over the Seoul South Korea, then did the United States provide military relief. Over 30,000 American lives were lost on a political move.
Truman was not opposed to helping the South Koreans throw the ruling North Korean Communists, and actually did formally call North Korean's invasion of South Korea a violation of international peace and furthermore demanded the Communists to withdraw. President Truman firmly believed that a policy of containment in Korea would be the best plan to end the war. He also sent military advisors over and supplies. But it soon became clear that it would not b enough to help the South Koreans. Truman did not want to start a war with the Chinese Communists. Truman just believed in the act of being there for the South Koreans with no permanent involvement in their battle. Truman's involvement was set to have no repercussions on the United States, he
Throughout history the United States has fought in many wars. Whether the fighting took place in Europe such as WWI or in our own land like the civil war. The one war many people seem to forget is the Korean War. The Korean War also known as the “forgotten war” was a war between North Korea, South Korea and the US together with the South Koreans to help. The Korean War was fought on sea, land, and in the air over and near the Korean peninsula (Brown, p.2). On June 25, 1950, the North Koreans rumbled across the thirty-eighth parallel. The invasion was successful because the south was not expecting or even prepare for a war. The invasion was so successful that they pushed the south to a tiny defensive area around Pusan. That’s when President Truman steps in real quick to halt the invasion of the North Koreans. Truman ordered American armed forces under General Douglas MacArthur to support South Korea. The Korean War was a clash between Communist forces and Free World (Brown, p.2).
This war began because of an attack on South Korea made by North Korea. The United Nations called on all of its members in order to fight back against this invasion, including the United States. The war was fought between American and South Korean forces versus Soviet, Chinese, and North Korean forces. Negotiations for a cease fire were first discussed in July of 1951 but the armistice finally stopped all fighting in July of the year 1953. This war was very bloody as all sides lost many lives.
Lastly, in 1950 the USSR began aiding the North Korean People’s Army invasion of U.S. supported South Korea commencing the Korean War and the first proxy war among the U.S. and the USSR (Campbell,
The Causes of the Korean War Korea had been under Japanese control since 1895, and in 1910 Korea was annexed by Japan. The Koreans were assimilated into Japanese mainstream culture: Newspapers were suspended the right of assembly was banned and political organizations were disbanded. Hostility and resentment increased, discrimination against Koreans (schools for example) and Re-structuring of land are other examples of what Korea had to go through. The Japanese control of Korea made Korea suffer and was one of the first factors which caused the Korean War. The march called “the First Movement” was the first big demonstration against the Japanese.
