After reading and analyzing the novel Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut, I have come to the conclusion that the religion the book is based upon, Bokononism, fits into Sigmund Freud's criteria of religion. To start off, Freud has a theory that religious practices and beliefs are all made up by human beings based on their desire to ease anxieties. The practices and beliefs of a religion are comparable to childhood neurosis. Childhood neurosis is the occurrence of a broad range of neurotic conditions such as fears, anxieties, compulsions, etc. Religious beliefs are similar to childhood neurosis because like other neuroses, they are semi-conscious creations designed to alleviate anxiety, they try to re-capture childhood feelings and securities for us. Even though these neuroses work, they come with a cost.

Religion is an idea or belief that varies among every culture and every person. In Cat’s Cradle it shares the idea of Bokononism while in Do androids Dream of Electric Sheep tells about Mercerism. Both of theses religions were created by a man themselves. Mercerism is a new religion based on the life and teachings of a man named Wilbur Mercer. It became known after Mercer’s death through the empathy boxes that were in the novel. For Bokononism though, it is a religion that has to do with people having groups of other people to who their fates are knotted, among other things. So basically saying that everyone tells lies and you ever know when they are saying is the truth. In the early pages of Cat’s Cradle, Vonnegut submits his contention that "a useful religion can be founded on lies (Vonnegut, Cats Cradle 16)," meaning that, fundamentally, religion is about people, not about faith or God. In this paper I attempt to describe the similarities and differences in both Erik Erikson and Sigmund Freuds ideas on development. I also attempt to describe the many influences that contributed to the creation of both Freud and Erikson's ideas of development as well as some background information on both theorists.
Sigmund Freud was born in 1856 to Jewish Galician parents in the Moravian town of Pribor in the Austrian Empire (“Sigmund Freud” n. pag). During his education in the medical field, Freud decided to mix the career fields of medicine and philosophy to become a psychologist (“Sigmund Freud” n. pag). During his research as a psychologist, he conceived the Structural Model Theory, which he discussed in his essay Beyond the Pleasure Principle. The theory states that the human psyche is divided into three main parts: the id, ego, and super-ego (“Id, Ego, and Super-ego” n. pag). He concluded that the id was the desire for destruction, violence and sex; the ego was responsible for intellect and dealing with reality; and the super-ego was a person’s sense of right and wrong and moral standards (Hamilton, n. pag). In the midst of his already successful career, Sigmund Freud decided to finally dedicate a book of his to religion, referring to the subject as a phenomena faced by the scientific community. This new work, Totem and Taboo, blew society off its feet, ultimately expanding the reaches of debates and intellectual studies. From the beginning, Freud argues that there exists a parallel between the archaic man and the contemporary compulsive. Both these types of people, he argues, exhibit neurotic behavior, and so the parallel between the two is sound. Freud argues that we should be able to determine the cause of religion the same way we determine the cause of neurosis. He believes, since all neuroses stem from childhood experiences, that the origins of this compulsive behavior we call religion should also be attributed to some childhood experiences of the human race, too. Freudian thought has been dominant since he became well known. In Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans, religion becomes entirely evident as a major part of the novel, but the role it specifically plays is what we should question. Therefore, I argue that Freud’s approach to an inborn sense of religion and the role it plays exists in The Last of the Mohicans, in that the role religion plays in the wilderness manifests itself in the form of an untouchable truth, an innate sense of being, and most importantly, something that cannot and should not be tampered with.
