The poem Catchment by Maxine Kumin has a theme of the harsh and depressing reality of nature. Throughout the poem she paints this nature story that completely pulls at the readers emotions. With extensive description, figurative language, and set structure Kumin demonstrates the uncontrollability and cruelty of nature. I wrote my poem Ocean to use these similar poetic devises to communicate the same theme. In Catchment the speaker uses extremely detailed descriptions to describe the events. By doing this it enhances the readers connection to the animals in the poem. Although, figurative language was used very little except the line “Nature a catchment of sorrows” this one line demonstrates that theme greatly. A catchment is simply that act of catching water or something that catches water. This metaphor says the catchment, nature; it is catching sorrow and not water. This in greater context means that nature causes all this pain and sadness, due to the survival of the fittest characteristics that create situations like the one in the poem. I utilized figurative language in the line “Nature an ocean full of sorrows” to demonstrate the same idea. I used an ocean, as it is such an immense object that holds an uncountable amount of water, or sorrows, and because my poem was based around the ocean. Within “Thanatopsis” by William Cullen Bryant, he states “She has a voice of gladness, and a smile/And eloquence of beauty, and she glides/Into his darker musings, with a mild/And healing sympathy (Bryant, 4-6).” The “she” Bryant is referring to is Mother Nature, which makes his statement that nature can take away a man’s pain that much more powerful. In Robert Frost's poem, "Once By The Pacific," he uses nature as his character. He uses the sea, the beach, skies, the cliffs, and the continent and then gives them human characteristics. I feel that he uses these items because the story he is trying to tell is bigger than life, bigger than what could be described with any mere human or animal. By using the seas, the skies, the shore, the cliffs, and the continent as his characters, Robert Frost gives us an image of God's last words having immense power to control the largest forces in the world. He also gives me the image of the clouds being the angry face of God with the two lines, "The clouds were low and hairy in the skies, / Like locks blown forward in the gleam of eyes" (Frost 903 lines 5-6). Along with his choice and use of characters, Robert Frost also uses rhyme and rhythm to add to the intensity of his poem.
The entire poem is based on powerful metaphors used to discuss the emotions and feelings through each of the stages. For example, she states “The very bird/grown taller as he sings, steels/ his form straight up. Though he is captive (20-22).” These lines demonstrate the stage of adulthood and the daily challenges that a person is faced with. The allusions in the poem enrich the meaning of the poem and force the reader to become more familiar with all of the meaning hidden behind the words. The silent water signals that although rough times occurred previously, the new day was a new start for the world. As I went closer to the water, I heard the subtle lapping of the water against the small rocks on the shore. Every sign of nature signals a change in life; no matter how slight, a change is significant. We can learn a lot from nature: whatever happens in the natural world, change comes and starts a new occurrence. I gazed over the water to where the sky met the sea. The body of water seemed to be endless under the clear blue sky. The scope of nature shows endless possibilities. Nature impresses us with the brilliant colors of the sky, the leaves, the water. She keeps us all in our places and warns us when we are careless with her. The ocean is the center and foundation of this story. The ocean is also part of the scenery and the background, without the ocean, there would be no story. Not only is the ocean the center and the foundation, it is also a symbol of many things in this story. To me, the ocean in this story takes on human characteristics in that to me, it symbolizes a seducer or seductress. The ocean also becomes an escape from reality and symbolizes life itself. The ocean is important because it is what helps bring Edna into her awakening and that is good, in the sense that it helps Edna into finding herself. However, the ocean is evil in that it is responsible for Edna’s demise.

The expressive poem ‘Clancy of the Overflow’ written by the prominent poet Andrew Barton Paterson illustrates the country life of a drover as the ideal lifestyle as it is the beauty and nature of mankind. This poem is extremely critical of city life and seems to only convey the negative aspects that are involved. During this analysis various poetic techniques as well as aesthetic features will be used including suggestive language, alliteration, metaphor and imagery are applied to describe the author’s use of poetic devices and to show how effectively the poet conveyed its messages and the link to Australian diversity.
The consistent pattern of metrical stresses in this stanza, along with the orderly rhyme scheme, and standard verse structure, reflect the mood of serenity, of humankind in harmony with Nature. It is a fine, hot day, `clear as fire', when the speaker comes to drink at the creek. Birdsong punctuates the still air, like the tinkling of broken glass. However, the term `frail' also suggests vulnerability in the presence of danger, and there are other intimations in this stanza of the drama that is about to unfold. Slithery sibilants, as in the words `glass', `grass' and `moss', hint at the existence of a Serpent in the Garden of Eden.
