The Catcher In the Rye can be described as a coming of age novel through many symbols from the book. In the novel, Holden is described as a sixteen-year-old boy with gray hair and is six foot two and a half. Even though Holden looks mature, he still has a mind of a child. This means that even with Holden looking like an adult, he still has not matured, and will be going through a journey that will change his mind from a child’s mind to an adult’s mind. Another symbol that represents The Catcher In the Rye as a coming of age novel are the curse words that are found on the school walls and in the museum.

However, he finds it again in the museum. “Another “Fuck you”. It was written with a red crayon or something….” (Salinger 204). With the words “Fuck you” written with a red crayon, it is clearly shown that it was a child who had written it. It shows that the kids in the novel are also reaching the stage of maturity, with their change of vocabulary.
Another symbol of coming of age is the carousel that was introduced towards the end of the novel. Phoebe had went on it, and when she asked Holden whether he was going to ride on it as well, he refused. The carousel is known as being childish, with only children known to be the one’s to ride it. This shows that Holden, who had a mind of a child throughout most of the novel, has started transitioning from the world of childhood to the world of adulthood.
